What to do and Where to stay in

Arenal Volcano is one of Costa Rica’s most well-known treasures and the picturesque setting and plethora of activities on offer make this region justifiably one of the most visited in the country. While it’s certainly not ‘off the beaten track’, a couple of days in this adventurer’s playground will promise some incredible experiences – what better way to strengthen the family bond!

When choosing where to stay, options are more limited than elsewhere in this unique destination. Hotels range from affordable mid-range resorts to some of Costa Rica’s most luxurious hotels like Nayara Tented Camp, with prices to match! Most Arenal hotels do have an international resort feel to them, designed to cater for the volume of visitors, and in our opinion often lack the individual character of the properties we feature elsewhere in Costa Rica, however they do make a good base for a busy few days enjoying all that the region has to offer!

Experiences in Arenal

Arenal volcano has a very impressive, almost perfect conical peak (although often hidden behind cloud cover!). Great for exploring with children as volcanoes frequently appear on the primary syllabus and what better way to learn about them than on a hike through dry lava fields!

Nestled in the jungle, thrilling zip-lines and networks of hanging bridges give you a birds-eye-view of the lush rainforest canopy while if you prefer to keep your feet on solid ground there are plenty of jungle trails to explore  and hidden waterfalls to discover.

At the base of the volcano the picturesque Arenal Lake offers more opportunities for adventure. Glide across the water on pedal boards and kayaks or hire mountain bikes and cycle along the shoreline. The rivers surrounding Arenal are perfect for white-water rafting.  The Balsa River is a great option for families with grade II to III rapids and stunning jungle scenery.

Should you wish to explore further afield the Cano Negro Wildlife Reserve can be visited on a full day trip. Explore this incredibly remote area by boat, navigating the wildlife-rich rivers and canals keeping your eyes peeled for crocodiles, caimans and troops of monkeys.

Finally, don’t forget to make time for a soak in the thermal hot springs, sure to leave you feeling relaxed and rejuvenated after an action-packed stay in Arenal.
