What to do and Where to stay in

Monteverde is in mountainous north-west Costa Rica. It’s renowned for its biodiverse cloud forests which attract scientists, bird watchers, and wildlife lovers from all over the world. For adventure enthusiasts there are also some great outdoor pursuits from high-altitude canopy walks to zip-lining through the misty forest.

Experiences in Monteverde

The highlight here is undoubtedly exploring the spectacular Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. Inside the reserve you can hike trails through the virgin forests and on a clear day see both the Caribbean and the Pacific coasts. Along with rich flora and fauna the reserve is home to an abundance of insects, butterflies and hundreds of different bird species including the endangered resplendent Quetzal. On the other side of town you’ll find the slightly smaller, and higher, Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve which has views of the Arenal Volcano.

A tour through the Monteverde Butterfly Garden is the perfect introduction to Costa Rica’s bug life with plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal with some creepy crawlies! Or join a Forest Night Tour and take in the sights and sounds of the Cloud Forest as it comes alive after dark.

Monteverde is home to numerous coffee and chocolate plantations many of which offer tours with plenty of opportunities for taste testing along the way!

The more adventurous can also choose to explore the cloud forest from a different perspective with exciting zip-line tours and hanging bridges suspended through the forest canopy.
