Sustainability
Lizard Island was designated a National Park in 1937, with its surrounding waters becoming a Marine Park in 1974. The resort prioritizes guest education on the Great Barrier Reef’s challenges by collaborating with the Lizard Island Research Station, a leader in coral reef research. This partnership has led to pioneering techniques to combat the Crown of Thorns, a significant predator of the reef.
As guests you are welcomed to tour the Research Station and engage with marine staff who provide insights into the health of the marine environment and conservation advances. Lizard Island is also a founding member of the Citizens of the Great Barrier Reef, demonstrating its commitment to preserving the region’s natural and cultural heritage.
The resort honors the island’s history by collaborating with the Traditional Owners, the Jiigurru of the Dingaal Aboriginal people. Guided walks allow guests to explore historical sites and hike to Cook’s Look, following in Captain Cook’s footsteps.
In sustainability efforts, the resort promotes recycling through seven waste streams and has eliminated plastic straws and bottles. Approximately 60% of the resort’s waste is recycled, and 90% of its food and beverages are sourced from local suppliers, ensuring minimal environmental impact and support for the local community.
