What to do and Where to stay in
The Cultural Triangle

In the heart of the country, Sri Lanka’s Cultural Triangle encompasses 4 UNESCO World Heritage sites; Anuradhapura, Polonnaruwa, Dambulla and the Sigiriya Fortress. With ancient ruins, extraordinary temples and gilded Buddhas this is a fascinating area to spend a few days exploring. If you are here during the drier summer months, don’t miss the incredible elephant gathering which takes place in Minneriya National Park.

Experiences in The Cultural Triangle

The ancient cities of Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa are rich with culture and history and home to ancient temples and some of the largest stupas in the world. Visit early in the morning before the sun is strong and you can cycle amongst the extensive ruins – a fun way to soak up the culture with active teens in tow!

One of Sri Lanka’s most iconic images, the magnificent Sigiriya Rock Fortress is an architectural and engineering marvel, originally built as a palace it later became a Buddhist monastery. Climbing the 600ft rock fortress is a memorable experience, your tour guide will bring the ancient palace to life and your efforts are rewarded with breath-taking 360-degree views of the surrounding jungle. With many steps to climb we suggest you visit first thing in the morning then head to the pool to escape the midday heat!

Dambulla to the south of the Cultural Triangle is another unmissable site. The intriguing Dambulla Cave Temples are carved out of solid rock and home to elaborate artwork and huge Buddha statues which have been wonderfully preserved.

Finally, when a break from the cultural sites calls, The Cultural Triangle is also home to 2 wonderful wildlife-rich National Parks – Minneriya and Kaudulla. A guided jeep safari offers an opportunity to spot elephants, spotted deer, monkeys and crocodiles. During the dry months, July to October, elephants from across the island migrate to the shores of the park’s enormous reservoir and this ‘Gathering’ attracts herds as big as 400.  While it is busy and there will be many other jeeps, this is a phenomenal sight to behold!
