Facilities & Activities
Life at The Plettenberg is wonderfully unhurried, but there’s plenty to dip into if you feel like being active. The hotel’s two swimming pools – one overlooking the ocean and another tucked into a more sheltered corner – are perfect for lazy afternoons with a book, while the small spa offers soothing treatments designed to ease travel-weary muscles. There’s also a compact gym for those keen to keep moving, although many guests find that long beach walks and coastal exploring do the job just as well.
The surrounding area is a playground for nature lovers. From guided whale watching during the migration season to forest hikes in nearby nature reserves, kayaking on lagoons, or simply wandering the wide sandy beaches, The Plettenberg makes an ideal base for exploring this beautiful stretch of coastline.

Dining
Dining at The Plettenberg is very much centred around its spectacular oceanfront setting, with floor-to-ceiling windows and terrace seating that keep the sea firmly in view from morning through to evening. The hotel’s signature restaurant, Amelia’s at The Plettenberg, is a destination in its own right, celebrated for its refined yet unfussy approach to dining. As the name suggests, fresh seafood takes pride of place, sourced with care and prepared simply to let the quality shine, alongside beautifully executed meat and vegetarian dishes inspired by local and seasonal ingredients.
Breakfast is served here each morning and is a relaxed, lingering affair, best enjoyed with a coffee in hand as waves crash below and the bay slowly comes to life. Lunch and dinner lean towards elegant, contemporary cuisine with a strong sense of place, making it just as appealing for a special evening as it is for a leisurely midday meal between beach walks.
For something more informal, the Sandbar is the hotel’s stylish lounge and bar, perfect for light bites, afternoon drinks or pre-dinner cocktails. This is the place for classic sundowners, with a well-curated wine list showcasing excellent South African labels, alongside cocktails mixed to order. As the sun dips into the ocean and the sky turns gold and rose, it’s easy to lose track of time here – a quintessential Plettenberg Bay moment that guests tend to remember long after they’ve left.
Rooms
Accommodation at The Plettenberg is spacious, light-filled and designed to maximise those panoramic views.
Double Rooms and Luxury Double Rooms are elegant and comfortable, many with balconies or terraces looking out over the ocean. For something extra special, Luxury Sea View Rooms place you front and centre with uninterrupted coastal panoramas that are hard to beat.
The hotel’s Suites offer more space to stretch out, ideal for longer stays or those celebrating a special occasion. Thoughtful design touches, plush furnishings and large windows ensure that the scenery outside always feels like part of the room, while modern amenities keep everything feeling effortless and indulgent.

Family
While The Plettenberg has a distinctly grown-up, romantic feel, families are warmly welcomed. Larger rooms and suites can accommodate children, and the easy access to beaches and outdoor activities makes it a great choice for families with older kids who enjoy nature, wildlife and open spaces. There’s no kids’ club, but the Garden Route itself provides endless entertainment.
Either a Suite or Premier Suite would be best suited for families with one child under 12 years sharing on an extra bed.
The Beach House is ideal for special family trips, accommodating up to 4 guests and the Lookout Villa has even more space to cater for parties of up to 6.
Sustainability
The Plettenberg is committed to responsible tourism, with a focus on preserving the natural beauty that makes this part of South Africa so special. Efforts include mindful water and energy use, supporting local suppliers where possible, and encouraging guests to engage respectfully with the surrounding environment and wildlife.
Location
The hotel sits right on the headland above Plettenberg Bay, offering easy access to the town’s beaches, shops and restaurants, while still feeling blissfully private. It’s around a 10–15 minute drive from Plettenberg Bay Airport, and perfectly positioned for exploring the wider Garden Route, from Tsitsikamma National Park to the forests and lagoons that define this scenic region. If you’re self driving from Cape Town, expect the journey to take around 5 – 6 hours. The journey time to George Airport, with more regular flights than Plettenberg Bay, is about 1.5 hours, or 3 hours to Port Elizabeth.
