Hidden in the rainforest above a secluded Pacific beach, El Remanso is the perfect wild retreat for families who love nature and are looking for a unique experience and a lodge which prides itself on its eco credentials.
Whether you prefer an action-packed itinerary or a more relaxed approach, there is something for everyone here although an afternoon siesta on the wooden deck of your cabin, entertained by monkeys swinging through the trees is a good way to pass the time! With a lush forest setting, wildlife galore and breath-taking views, it is the ideal place to switch off from everyday distractions and re-connect with the important things in life – our families and the natural world we live in.
Facilities & Activities
El Remanso features a beautiful swimming pool with a large wooden deck. It is the ideal place to relax after an active day of hiking; sunbathe, catch up on your reading and enjoy the soothing sounds of the rainforest whilst you soak in the fresh spring waters.
There is a vast array of activities to suit everyone; from adrenaline-pumping experiences like waterfall rappelling to romantic moments like the classic canopy breakfast and rainforest massages. Don’t miss the opportunity to get out and about with the tremendously knowledgeable resident naturalist guide, who will take you on one of several different trails. Gaze at magnificent giant trees and observe the local wildlife, assured of an introductory tropical biology lesson like no other.
The Oso Peninsula’s Golfo Dulce is one of only 4 tropical fjords around the world and is home to a large variety of wildlife, including dolphins, whales (Aug-Nov), rays, whale sharks and sea turtles. You can join a dolphin-watching boat tour from Puerto Jiménez harbour which also includes a stop for snorkelling and swimming on the other side of the gulf.
Other activities which can be organised locally include surf lessons, kayaking through the mangroves and horse-riding along the beach.

The restaurant deck is built on the top of a forest canyon, enabling great views of the underlying forest. Local chefs will surprise guests with two different menu options every day, a perfect mix of international cuisine, with a ‘tico’ and tropical touch. The Mirador area of the restaurant offers comfortable lounge sofas to lay back and relax.
The pool-side bar ‘Los Encantitos’ offers fresh smoothies, soft drinks, local beers and your favourite cocktails. It is especially popular for pre-dinner drinks. Try out the piña coladas, caipirinhas or margaritas – all freshly prepared!
The owner-operated lodge offers 14 sustainable villas, bungalows and rooms overlooking the dense rainforest, some with views of the sparkling Pacific below.
Casa Poniente is a 2-storey building set beside the pool. Poniente Rooms are on the ground floor with garden or pool views while Superior Rooms are located on the top floor with ocean views. All rooms feature a furnished terrace which is partly covered and provides the perfect space for relaxation and wildlife watching.
The Classic Bungalows are spacious and comfortable one-bedroom cabins that can accommodate up to 4 people. With cool clay-tile floors they are made out beautiful tropical hardwoods, all of which come from fallen timber taken out of the private nature reserve. The front side of the cabins has a full height sliding door offering excellent air ventilation and the opportunity to see wild monkeys climbing in the nearby trees and hear the orchestra of jungle sounds. Hammocks and comfortable terrace chairs offer perfect opportunities for relaxation after an active day in the rainforest.
The Deluxe Villas enjoy a more secluded setting and boast a private plunge pool, a favourite with couples who are looking for a romantic getaway. For the ultimate seclusion the 2-storey Deluxe Double Villa is nestled in the rainforest with spectacular views over the treetops towards the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean beyond.
At El Remanso all rooms and cabins feature wooden shutters or screens and curtains instead of glass windows to protect the flying birdlife.

We love El Remanso for its family-friendly appeal and approach. Children are welcomed with open arms and the warm and friendly guides will soon replace Steve Backshall and Bear Grylls in super-hero status!
El Remanso is proof that a high-quality experience can be achieved with minimal environmental impact! The lodge is proud to be one of only a few hotels in Costa Rica that rely 100% on renewable energy which is generated from solar panels and the lodge’s hydroelectric system. We also love their commitment to the local community by only hiring local staff and supporting Puerto Jimenez Library & Community Centre. If you wish to ‘pack for a purpose’ donations of children’s books are always gratefully received!
El Remanso is nestled in the heart of the rainforest on the Osa Peninsula in a private reserve of 185-acres. Access to this remote South-West corner of Costa Rica is via a domestic flight from San Jose to Puerto Jimenez (approx. 1 hour) followed by a 4WD transfer to your lodge.
