Amanwella

Located in a mature coconut grove fronting a crescent-shaped beach, Amanwella is a beachfront retreat offering 30 contemporary suites, each with private plunge pool and terrace.

The resort’s suites are linked by pathways along a landscaped rise with beach and ocean views. Guests can relax on the expansive terrace surrounding the main pool or on the soft sand beach. The seaside town of Tangalle is situated nearby and a short stroll will reveal village life and Sri Lanka’s diverse flora and fauna.

Facilities & Activities

Amanwella’s golden beach is located in an 800m crescent-shaped cove, fringed with palm trees and during the calmer seas of the winter months, snorkelling is possible (complimentary snorkelling equipment is provided) whilst during the summer months, avid surfers can take advantage of private surfing lessons arranged by the lifeguard.

The 47-metre swimming pool is backed by a large terrace, dotted with sun loungers. Featuring a unique internal wall design, the pool overlooks the bay and the crescent-shaped beach. Views are particularly spectacular at sunset. The air-conditioned library is an ideal venue for afternoon tea and the boutique offers a selection of Sri Lankan artefacts, jewellery, textiles and antiques.

Excursions to Yala and Udawalawe National Parks can be arranged as well as visits to the reclining Buddhas in the rock temples at Mulgirigala.

Dining

The Restaurant is located within the cluster of public buildings at the southern end of the resort and is open all day. Perched eight metres above sea level, it offers stunning views across the pool towards the coconut grove and beach. The cuisine is Asian and Mediterranean with an emphasis on local seafood from the Indian Ocean. Adjacent to the Restaurant is the lounge and bar which also enjoys panoramic views. Here drinks and snacks are served along with exotic sundowners.

The Pool Terrace adjacent to the swimming pool is ideal for alfresco dining. During the day, simple lunches as well as fresh young coconuts and local fruit are served. In the evening guests can dine on antipasti and home-style dishes while relaxing on the daybeds and bolsters. Close to the beachfront amidst coconut trees and away from the main building, the Beach Club provides an alternative venue for lunch and private dinners. The menu includes simple Asian salads, Mediterranean classics (using the local seafood), granitas and freshly churned ice cream. Seafood is cooked over a coconut charcoal barbeque and served with garden fresh salads and local relishes.

Rooms

Situated mostly on the hillside, the Suites enjoy varying views of the coconut grove and ocean. Floor-to-ceiling glass and latticed panels form two sides of the dwelling – one opening onto a private walled-in entry courtyard and plunge pool, with the terrace side opposite affording open views. The plunge pool measures 6m x 4m and the courtyard features a banquette for lounging and dining. Timber sliding doors and panels reveal the interior spaces.

There is a combined sleeping and living room with a king-size bed, writing desk, armchair with footstool and a credenza featuring a personal bar with refreshments. Sliding screens divide this area from the open-plan bathroom featuring a free-standing bathtub, twin vanities, dressing area, shower and toilet. Access to the spacious terrace is again via sliding doors from the living areas and the bathroom. The terrace includes a dining table with two chairs and a double sun lounger. Terrazzo floors are finished in muted, sandy tones that reflect the beach setting. Three sets of Suites share a connecting door on the terrace. These are ideal for families or couples travelling together.

Ocean Suites are situated on the lower levels of the hill and enjoy uninterrupted views of the coconut grove and beach. Most are free-standing, although 4 sets of Suites share a connecting door on the terrace. Again, these are ideal for families or couples travelling together.

Family

Children are warmly welcomed at Amanwella with complimentary babysitting available and connecting Suites (connecting door on the terrace).

Sustainability

At Amanwella, they have eliminated 97% of single use plastic and they are pursuing to achieve 100% shortly. They provide bicycles at both resorts, for their guests to use when exploring the Galle Fort or even through the paddy fields in Tangalle, without using any carbon emission vehicles.

All Amanwella’s spa products and toiletries for hotel guests feature local and natural ingredients as well as organic products. They also integrate organic produce in their menus as much as possible, by using home grown vegetable and fruit.

The hotel supports programs tackling issues for women, children, against poverty and hunger including offering support to local school programs and orphanages, support for female led businesses to create economic independence.  Employment priority is also given to local residents, support of local agriculture in culinary art, purchase of local products; fair trade, cage-free and free-range products.

Location

Colombo’s Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) is located about 30km North of the city. Travel time between the Airport and the city centre is approximately ½ hour. The car transfer from BIA to Amanwella varies between 2¾ hours and 3¾ hours. Cinnamon Air runs a daily Airtaxi service from BIA to Dickwella Airstrip, a 15-minute drive from Amanwella.

Amanwella will arrange complimentary transfers to and from Dickwella by road. Helicopter transfers are available through Deccan Aviation.
