Spice Village, Periyar
This village style resort, located in the highlands, just a few miles from Periyar Tiger Reserve, is set in a 15 acre spice garden and surrounded by lush greenery.
The thatched roofed cottages, scattered throughout the garden blending in with their surroundings are simple and comfortable, and the food, using locally sourced ingredients where possible, is exceptional. Active guests will love the facilities, not only is there the garden to explore, but there is a good sized swimming pool and a sports centre with badminton, tennis and a basketball court.

Spice Village takes great pride in locally sourcing nearly all its ingredients. In fact they have a restaurant called 50 Mile Diet Restaurant, serving local and continental dishes with all the ingredients sourced within 50 miles! Much of it of course comes from even closer, with many vegetables and spices grown in house.
The main restaurant, Tamarind, is a buffet restaurant serving both regional and international cuisines whilst the Woodhouse Lounge, which showcases a 150 year old billiards table at its’ heart, is the ideal spot for an atmospheric pre-dinner drink or nightcap.
The thatched roofed Spice Garden Cottages have a simple elegance with coir mats on bare stone floors, and the use of natural materials and local woodcraft. The rooms are naturally light and airy so there is no air conditioning, and the private porch is a lovely space to sit and enjoy your natural surroundings. We recommend upgrading to a Deluxe Cottages so that you can benefit from your own private garden, a personal little slice of paradise.

Spice Village is a really popular choice for families and with so many activities on offer, you can see why. Children will love the swimming pool and exploring the large gardens, and for active families, you can hire e-bikes, book a trek into the reserve, or make use of the hotel’s own badminton, tennis and basketball courts. There is also a programme of activities specifically designed for children such as nature inspired art sessions, treasure hunts and movie nights, as well as plenty of indoor games and boards games to keep them entertained in the evenings.
The guest cottages are spacious enough for families to enjoy and extra beds can be provided for children sharing with parents.
Spice Village is a CGH Earth hotel whose whole ethos is to create eco-friendly and community aware hotels. The resort was built using local materials with local artisans, and has been hugely influenced by the local communities who to this day are an integral part of the operation. From the Mannan tribe who re-thatch the cottages in the indigenous way, the women’s group who make candles, to the local farmers who supply fresh produce.
75% of the hotel’s power needs are now created by solar energy, drinking water in plastic bottles has been replaced by reverse osmosis filtered drinking water served in reusable glass bottles, and food waste is turned into compost for the gardens. The organic farm provides fresh fruit, vegetables and spices to the restaurants, reducing the food mileage, and biowaste is used to make recycled handmade paper used for in-house guest stationary, manuals, notepads, and even paper garlands for the guests.
Spice Village is located in the small village of Kumily, in the picturesque hills of Thekkady, just minutes from the entrance to Periyar Tiger Reserve. The closest airport is Cochin International Airport which is a 4-5 hour drive and the scenic drive down to the backwaters takes approximately 3-4 hours.
