Southern Patagonia
Estancia Cristina
Tucked deep in the wild beauty of Argentine Patagonia, Estancia Cristina is a truly special place. Originally founded in 1914 by an English pioneer and named after his daughter, this historic estancia started out as a remote ranching outpost—complete with tents! Today, it’s been lovingly transformed into a comfortable and charming lodge, perfect for guests looking to disconnect and explore.
Surrounded by glaciers, snow-capped peaks, and sparkling lakes, the setting is just as jaw-dropping now as it was back then. Whether you’re here for hiking, horseback riding, or just soaking up the peace and quiet, it’s hard not to feel lucky to experience this remote corner of Los Glaciares National Park.
With its homely clapboard-style cabins, easy-going adventures and endless open space, Estancia Cristina is the ideal destination for both couples and families looking to explore Patagonia at their own pace. Just a heads-up: the estancia is open seasonally from October to April, which is the best time to enjoy the Patagonian summer and all the outdoor activities on offer.

Facilities & Activities
The Upsala Glacier is one of the largest and most stunning in Los Glaciares National Park. You can take an unforgettable boat ride through Lake Argentino, surrounded by icebergs and towering mountains, then head to Estancia Cristina for the perfect blend of nature, adventure and history.
Admission to Los Glaciares National Park is included in your room rate, so, like the pioneers of previous generations, there is every opportunity to explore this very special region of Argentina. We recommend staying at least two nights to make the most of everything this place has to offer.
At Estancia Cristina, you can enjoy everything from self-guided walks and mountain biking to birdwatching. If you’re up for more of an adventure, take part in guided activities like trekking, horseback riding, 4WD tours, or even fishing trips with bilingual guides.
Just so you know, Wi-Fi and mobile signal are only available in the Octagon, so be ready to disconnect and enjoy the Patagonian wilderness.

Dining
Guests at Estancia Cristina usually stay on a full-board basis, which includes all meals and soft drinks (but not alcoholic drinks). The menu here is very much about using local produce where possible, and creating tasty and healthy food with a heavy regional bias…think mouth-watering Patagonian lamb, fresh vegetables, homemade breads and pastries and of course, fine Argentine wines. There is a lovely selection of picnic lunches available for those guests out exploring for the day.
Rooms
We love the ethos of Estancia Cristia and the notion that it continues to be a place of rest and refuge as it has always been – although admittedly a stay here is vastly more comfortable than it was 100 years ago! There are just 20 comfortable modern rooms throughout 5 lodges, all with incredible views of Mts. Norte, Pfifter and Moyano. They have been decorated in a relaxing, homely style which is sure to make you feel both welcome and cosy, whatever the weather. The décor very much echoes the fascinating history of the estancia and of course, its stunning setting amidst glaciers and mountains. In line with the off-the-grid remote experience, guestrooms do not have phones, TV or Wi-Fi.

Family
If you are an active, outdoors kind of family with children who love wide open spaces and who have a keen desire to explore, Estancia Cristina is a really lovely option and somewhere we’d have no hesitation recommending. The Estancia is super family-friendly and the team goes out of their way to ensure you make the most of your stay here. Many of the activities can be tailored to suit children, although it’s worth noting that many of the rides and hikes are best suited to children aged 12+.

Location
As befits its amazing location, Estancia Cristina is not the easiest place to reach, but it is certainly worth the effort. Most guests take the 3.5 hour flight from Buenos Aires to El Calafate, from where you have a 45-minute road transfer to Puerto Bandera. From there, you will enjoy a breathtaking 3-hour boat ride to the estancia, through stunning landscapes, passing the awe-inspiring Upsala Glacier along the way. The journey is an adventure in itself!
Please note that the boat usually leaves early in the morning, so it’s a good idea to stay in El Calafate the night before your trip (and possibly on your way back too).
