Dining

Dining is sure to be a highlight of a stay at the Tea Trails. The day starts with the wonderful tradition of ‘bed tea’; served by your butler as part of a gentle wake-up call, is there a more civilised way to start the day?! The butler will also draw your bath before you enjoy a sumptuous breakfast. Tea Trails is all about the time-honoured planters’ traditions: Roaring fires and the comfort of a single malt whisky while the mists roll in or a stiff gin and tonic after a long day’s walk in the tea gardens, accompanied by the spicy flavours of Sri Lankan nibbles to stimulate the appetite. Menus for lunch and dinner are drawn up by the chef in the morning and most dietary requirements can be met. Full cream tea is served mid-afternoon.

Rooms

Summerville, Castlereagh and Dunkeld Bungalows overlook the Castlereagh lake, Norwood is at the other end of the valley and Tientsin is in the next valley. There are 5 or 6 guests rooms in each bungalow and they offer a taste of heritage luxury with solid teak furnishings, plush beds and antique touches.

Choose to stay in elegant Luxury Rooms, Garden Suites which are more spacious and open onto a private garden or Master Suites which are larger still with a separate living rooms and private gardens (with the exception of Tientsin which does not have a garden). All rooms have en-suite bathrooms with a traditional bathtub and rain shower, along with a dedicated butler service.

Family

Children are welcome at Ceylon Tea Trails and the ‘Junior Chef’ experience is sure to be hit with the younger guests. Kids will enjoy making the local favourite “coconut and treacle pancakes”, or coconut and cinnamon cookies. For older kids, more complex items such as the classic Sri Lankan “Chocolate Biscuit Putting” is a fun challenge with a local touch.

Sustainability

Ceylon Tea Trails has been very successful in reducing its carbon footprint. No air-conditioning is required given the natural cool climate of the destination, water is sourced from natural sources such as streams and wells and all food waste goes to a local piggery, avoiding landfills in in the Hill Country. The resort is also involved in a local charity, helping women and children from poor areas and setting up early years’ centres. Staff are often involved in community projects such as cleaning Castlereagh Lake, tree planting and supporting the local temples and schools.

Location

Ceylon Tea Trails is perched at an altitude of 1250m in Sri Lanka’s scenic tea region. The nearest major town is Hatton which is approx. 20 minutes away from the closest bungalows. The hotel is approx. 5 hours from Galle and Colombo or 3 hours from Kandy by car.
