Chobe National Park
Sanctuary Chobe Chilwero

Perched atop a hillside with sweeping vistas as far as the eye can see, is an exquisite thatched oasis which provides the perfect setting for watching the neighbours- the largest and most majestic of mammals – the Kalahari elephants.

You’ll also find exhilarating safaris, tranquil riverboat cruises, gourmet African treats, vintage wines, landscaped gardens and, just in case that isn’t relaxing enough, a destination spa – complete with treetop treatment room. Choose your hammock, make sure you have your fresh homemade cocktail to hand, sit back and soak in the incredible surroundings.

Facilities & Activities

The area is home to the largest concentration of African elephant, who share their lush riverside habitat with an abundance of sable and roan antelope, and the elusive Puku antelope. Predatory lions and wild dog are often spotted along with buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, warthog, impala and the ever-skipping kudu. Twice daily game drives in open 4×4 vehicles bring you into close contact with nature, or take a safari by boat to observe the water based wildlife.

Try your hand at fishing, with help from the local guides, or venture further afield to one of the great wonders of the world – the thundering Victoria Falls, jus 90 minutes away!.

Chobe Chilwero is the only retreat in Botswana which offers spa facilities- true decadence in the wilds of Africa. An outdoor spa bath, hydrotherapy, plunge pools and opulent private treatment rooms- one of which is in the treetops, and African inspired eco-treatments make this a true oasis.

There’s a vast split level swimming pool to bask in, a boutique selling local crafts and a library, perfect for curling up with a well-thumbed book. If that all sounds too much, take advantage of the large terrace and the camp’s extraordinary setting (Chilwero means ‘high view’ in Setswana) and soak up the panoramic views of the islands and floodplains which stretch as far as Namibia.

Fresh, seasonal and always served with a personal touch – tailored to individual guests’ specific tastes – the cuisine here is outstanding and a skilful blend of Western and African ingredients. Enjoy a freshly brewed mug of coffee and a hot ‘English’ breakfast before setting off for the morning adventure. Replenish at lunchtime with a three course menu or perhaps a wood fired pizza, before a snooze in the hammocks.

High tea is served in the stunning gardens, before you head out again. Enjoy a sundowner and delectable canapés out in the bush with an African sunset as your backdrop before arriving back at camp for pre-dinner drinks on the terrace with sweeping views over the Chobe River.

Dinner is another mouth watering three course feast, usually including signature dishes from the lovely resident chef who’ll greet you personally and find out your specific requests. Select a delicious South African wine and enjoy the star filled skies (and maybe take a notebook – most guests want to know the chef’s secrets). Dine with other guests or take a romantic table for two in the gardens or on your own private terrace at your cottage.

Fourteen story-book thatched cottages nestle amongst the lovingly tendered gardens. Large glass doors allow for stunning views whilst the private walled gardens behind add a certain charm. Mosaic floors, traditional fabrics and enormous four poster beds complete the luxurious scene along with opulent Victorian style bathrooms and indoor and outdoor showers. Relax in the hammock on the terrace and enjoy the spectacular views.

If you’d rather more privacy, their new Pool Suite features a private plunge pool and private deck where you can kick back and enjoy some freshly made cocktails or enjoy dinner under the stars. Caffeine lovers will also be pleased to know that coffee stations are available for use in the rooms.

Chobe Chilwero is a great choice for a family safari adventure. All ages are given a warm African welcome and the lodge itself is completely fenced. Ages 5- 11 are allowed on the game drives (at the Manager’s discretion) but under 5s must be booked into a private safari vehicle. However there are also shortened game drives specifically for the children – a tantalising taste of the wild outdoors.

There’s a dedicated children’s program which will keep them busy all day long, introducing them to the wonders of African nature. They’ll go on guided walking safaris (within the grounds) and learn about trees, collect pods, leaves and seeds for craft activities, search for clues in the safari hunt and then have a little spot of croquet on the lawn. They’ll even serve up their own home cooked wood fired pizzas, working alongside the chef. In addition, there’s a large swimming pool, board games and a television in the spacious lounge area. Three of the new suites feature an extra bedroom, making them ideal for families.

Children’s menus are available and evening meal times are flexible. The thatched cottages are spacious enough for a family and they’ll love having their own private garden to explore. Babysitting is available on request.

Sanctuary builds long-lasting relationships with the local communities around them. They run the Elephant Outreach Programme to reframe local children’s attitudes towards elephants, since most children in Botswana only know them as problem animals who trample their families’ fields. Interacting with them on these two day excursions gives them a newfound appreciation for the animal, and inspires them to protect their future.

This riverside retreat sits on the border of Chobe National Park in northern Botswana and is easily accessible by road and air – Kasane International airport is only a 10 minute drive away. Flights and road transfers are also available from Livingstone in Zambia and there are easy links to most of the other camps in the region. The spectacular Victoria Falls are just an hour and a half away- perfect for a day trip.
