Summer in Sri Lanka , Young Adventurers
For a thorough introduction to the delights of this beautiful island, opt for this family-friendly summer itinerary which takes in ancient cities, festivals, the 'gathering of the elephants', a dose of soft adventure and time on the beach (plus the lush green tea plantations in the Hill Country, if this appeals too). From start to finish you will have your own highly experienced, friendly driver-guide ensuring everything you see and do is on your terms and entirely bespoke. We've suggested some tried and tested family-friendly hotels and lodges, with activities and facilities that will appeal to children and that touch of something special for the grown-ups. For us Sri Lanka ticks a lot of boxes!

On arrival in Colombo, head to the sublimely relaxing Wallawwa Hotel for 1 night - the perfect spot to re-charge your batteries after your overnight flight. From here, head towards fascinating Sigiriya in the Cultural Triangle for the perfect blend of cullture, wildlife and fun; climb Sigiriya rock fortress and take a jeep drive to meet the elephants in Minneriya. Stay at Cinnamon Lodge for 3 nights if a big swimming pool is key, but beware the naughty monkeys who might be after your goggles or your lunch! Otherwise, head further north to Ulagalla Resort for 5 star luxury and the chance to hang out with peacocks when you're not kayaking though giant lily-pads on the lake.
Next stop the beach for 4 nights, perhaps stopping to cycle around Polonnaruwa en-route. Try a spot of boogie-boarding at Uga Jungle Beach, or if you prefer crystal calm waters and a spot of beach volleyball, head to Uga Bay in Passkikudah. The East Coast is bathed in sunshine during our summer months.
Return to the Cultural Triangle, this time for 3 nights in Kandy, famous for its Temple of the Tooth – if your dates co-incide, don't miss the Perahera Festival for a unique insight into one of Sri Lanka's most celebrated festivals, with decorated elephants, fire dances and drummers galore. Stay at charming Rosyth Estate House where you can enjoy a day exploring all that is on offer, including a visit to the authentic Tea Factory. Kids will love the 'fruit and spice' treasure hunt around the terraced gardens and family cookery lessons are also very popular! Thanks to the new roads in Sri Lanka, it's an easy run back to the airport, to connect with your daytime flight home, or if more active adventure appeals, head up to the Hill Country to spend time exploring by bike or on foot, perhaps including rafting at Borderlands.
