Northern Thailand

Chiang Mai is Thailand’s second largest city with a charming, relaxed atmosphere and a much slower pace than Bangkok. Founded as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom in 1296, its proliferation of magical temples, bustling markets and intimate dining scene gives it an atmosphere of an ancient rural village alongside its more recent modern sophistication. The old town, teeming with glittering temple spires, is home to barefoot monks collecting alms at sunrise and replaced by noisy street vendors and bartering locals in the evening. Driving out of the city in any direction leads to quiet country villages, busy markets, lush green hills dotted with waterfalls; ideal for hiking and rafting adventures.

Further north lies Chiang Rai, Chiang Mai’s quieter sister. Inhabited since the 7th century, you’ll discover ancient Buddhist temples, remote hill tribes, exotic wildlife, elephant encounters and of course the famous golden triangle, the former centre of the world’s opium trade.
