If you are heading to the parks and game reserves of the North West after an international flight, we would advise an overnight stop in Johannesburg, the country’s financial and commercial heartland, to enable you to rest before your onward journey. However, the region also offers a selection of activities and attractions which may tempt you to stay longer.

Experiences in Johannesburg

The Cradle of Humankind, a World Heritage Site rich in paleontological finds, provides the opportunity to learn about ancient man and Africa.

Moving forward in time, Gold Reef City reconstructs life in Johannesburg after the main gold reef was discovered in 1886 whilst, close by, the powerful Apartheid Museum, focuses on the recent triumph of the human spirit over adversity. An insight in to life today for many can be gained through a Township Tour of the vibrant metropolis of Soweto, but this is only advisable as part of an organised tour.

Johannesburg also provides plenty of opportunity for shopping, for state of the art malls and entertainment centres to local arts and crafts.

The pretty Magaliesberg range is a chain of low hills with meandering streams, a 90 minute drive from Johannesburg. Close by is the Hartbeesport Dam which forms part of a Nature Reserve, but boating, fishing and even water-skiing is permitted.

There are some excellent wildlife sanctuaries that could provide a chance to see animals up close before going on safari. These include the Elephant Sanctuary, Rhino and Lion Park and the De Wildt Cheetah and Wildlife Centre.
