Saint Lucia, Caribbean
Lush and mountainous the beautiful volcanic island of St Lucia is one of the most distinctive of the Caribbean islands thanks to its majestic twin ‘pitons’ Petit and Gros.
Rising half a mile out of the sea on the southwest coast these iconic symbols of the island are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. They are truly stunning – and can even be explored on foot. If you like a little challenge on your holiday why not take five hours to climb 2,619 ft up Gros with a guide?
The island’s dramatic landscape only adds to the beauty of its beaches and azure waters. When you are fully relaxed, however, there is plenty for nature lovers to explore both on land and at sea. A guided hike through the island’s dense rainforest is well worth the effort – you’ll be rewarded with lush foliage, waterfalls and the rare opportunity to spot the Amazona Versicolor Parrot, the island’s national bird.
St Lucia’s stunning wildlife is even more bountiful at sea. Guided boat trips can lead you to pods of spinning and spotted dolphins as well as pilot, sperm and orca whales.
If you feel even more intrepid you could try a zip-wire adventure or a visit to one of the world’s few drive-in volcanoes, which allows guests to experience the sights and scents of bubbling mud and sulphur springs.
