Lima, Peru

Peru’s modern capital is the busy, thriving metropolis you would expect. Known as the Garden City thanks to its many lovely parks it has some interesting sights and redeeming architectural gems. If you are arriving late at night and flying out the next morning, you may want to stay at an airport hotel. Otherwise, there are many 4-5* options in Miraflores and San Isidro.

If you have time to linger, don’t miss The Aliaga House - the oldest house in the Americas and still in the Aliaga family. Much of the original main house is on display. Or head to Plaza de Armas, where you will find Government Palace, Archbishop's Palace and the Municipal Palace (City Hall) each with their intricately carved wooden balconies that make the downtown cityscape so unique.

Or take some time out from museums, to stroll along El Malecón, a six-mile stretch of parks situated along the cliffs high above the Pacific Ocean and incorporating Larcomar, with its upmarket restaurants and boutiques. North of the Parque del Amor and you'll see the taking-off point for parasailers. Or for something different, The Magic Water Circuit (Circuito Mágico del Agua) is the city's newest attraction and likely to appeal to all ages!
