Sani Lodge
  • rooms

Sani Lodge accommodates a maximum of 38 guests, emphasizing quality rather than quantity, and thereby offering you a more intimate experience. The lodge itself consists of ten, private, thatch-roofed cabanas and 4 family size cabins, each with a private bathroom. The cabanas are spaciously designed for double or triple occupancy, and have screened in windows to guard against insects while you sleep. Electric lights at the lodge run from ecologically friendly solar energy.

  • facilities & activities

Of course the real appeal of a lodge in this location lies in the activities on offer. A typical itinerary will offer you the chance to visit the 100ft observation tower, opening up a whole new world of Amazonian biodiversity that is normally impossible to see. With luck you'll spot white-throated toucans, bare-necked fruitcrows and red howler monkeys. There is also caiman watching, night-time jungle walks, hiking, community visits, guided introductions to the Yasuni National Park and even blowgun practice. Rates include all meals starting with lunch on the first day and finishing with breakfast on the last day (excluding drinks), snacks for the duration, all excursions, guide, Wi-fi in the bar area, rubber boot and raincoat loan. The lodge provide you with rubber boots, rain ponchos and umbrellas.

  • dining

The open-air dining room offers exquisite views of colourful sunsets over a beautiful lake.

Guests enjoy 3 meals a day, all prepared by the experienced kitchen staff and signalled by the call of a bamboo horn! Meal times are fixed: breakfast 5:00 – 6:00 am (depending on the activity), lunch 1:00pm and dinner 6:30 pm. The chef is happy to cater for vegetarians and those with specific dietary requirements.

There is also a bar serving drinks and snacks, open from 7.00 am until 11.00 pm and offering the perfect spot from which to bird-watch. Binoculars, games, books and even an acoustic guitar are available for guests.

You can also buy flashlights, 't' shirts, art supplies, bags and hats here - everything is offered with the intention of making your stay as comfortable as possible and supporting the local community.

  • family

Whilst the journey here is fascinating, it is not straight-forward and can be tiring. Additionally, guests need to appreciate the remoteness of the lodge, the fact that anti-malarials are likely to be needed and the basic nature of the accommodation. With these factors in mind, we really only recommend this experience for families with older children.

  • location

Sani Lodge is located in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Although it is possible to reach the lodge by road, the journey is long and uncomfortable so a short domestic flight to Coca and onward transfer by boat is infinitely preferable. Flights are with TAME and operate as follows:

    Mondays to Fridays:

    Quito – Coca / Flight EQ211 / Departure: 10:20 am / Arrival: 11:00 am
    Coca – Quito / Flight EQ212 / Departure: 11:40 am / Arrival: 12:20 pm

    Saturdays:

    Quito – Coca / Flight EQ211 / Departure: 11:35 am / Arrival: 12:15 pm
    Coca – Quito / Flight EQ212 / Departure: 01:00 pm / Arrival: 01:40 pm

On arrival in Coca, you will be met for your transfer to the banks of Napo River. There, your bilingual guides will explain about safety before embarking on a 2 1/2 -3 hour boat trip on the largest Ecuadorian affluent of the Amazon, the Napo River. During the journey you get a taste of the Amazon - ancestral communities, birds such as herons, egrets and vultures, while enjoying a delicious packed lunch. The canoe ride is followed by a 15 minute walk through flooded forest, and 20-minute paddle canoe across the beautiful Challuacocha Lake. Staff will welcome you with refreshing cold drinks and snacks before you settle down in your cabins.

NB. The Sani Lodge does not have a high incidence of Malaria or Yellow Fever but nonetheless it is present, so guests are advised to take preventative medication.
