  • rooms

The 17 spacious thatched bungalows nestled on the hillside within the rain forest exude tranquility and are very much in harmony with their setting. Featuring high-pitched ceilings they feel spacious and calm. Screened, open sided walls and fans provide a welcome breeze. Rooms are finished with warm wooden floors and there are comfortable beds (2 queen beds or 1 king size bed) draped with soft white mosquito nets and dressed in quality cottons. Classic bamboo furnishings are elegantly arranged, and each bungalow offers a private deck, with secluded garden shower.

As with everything at Lapa Rios, there are thoughtful little touches such as water bottles, wind-up torches and locally-made, organic chocolates. Newly remodeled bathrooms feature a dual showering experience. On one side, a stone-laid floor massages your feet as you shower under rain-like cool water, providing the unique sensation of showering in your own private waterfall. A second shower offers the more conventional hot and solar-heated water with tile floor, perfect after a day’s hike in the rain forest. Lapa Rios provide special Costa Rican Aromas para el Alma toiletries, made from natural Costa Rican products, which are fully biodegradable.

  • facilities & activities

Lapa Rios is all about immersing yourself in the glorious surroundings. There are a plethora of walks and hikes, with something for everyone (some incur extra charges). The enthusiasm of the bi-lingual guides is contagious and you will be overwhelmed by the sheer diversity of trees, animals, butterflies and birds. Children particularly love the mischievous Spider Monkeys and the dolphin tours where you can also see stingrays and turtles.

The stunning and largely deserted beach is an easy 15 minutes walk/shuttle bus ride from reception. Whilst the strong currents mean that it is not suitable for swimming, it is perfect for surfing and there is tuition on hand for those who want to learn to master the waves.

Other popular activities include sea kayaking, waterfall rapelling, zip-lining and fishing. Or you might enjoy horse-riding along the beach and through the rainforest.

For relaxation, there is a lovely (unchlorinated) swimming pool with loungers and stunning views. There is also yoga or you could enjoy a wonderful, restorative in-room massage.

  • dining

Lapa Rios is wonderfully remote and consequently all guests stay on a full board basis. The setting for meals is the atmospheric and very traditional palenque with spectacular views over the valley below.

There is a fantastic choice on offer for breakfasts - the perfect anecdote to an early morning birdwatching expedition, or as a precursor to a morning spent exploring the rainforest.

Staff will provide mouth-watering picnics for lunch for those on hikes.

Having already selected your meal choices for dinner earlier in the day, the evening meal starts in style with drinks and cocktails at the bar.

The impressive menu, which would rival some of the best restaurants in London, is organic and locally sourced wherever possible.

  • family

Lapa Rios goes out of the way to welcome families and multi-generational groups.

Children with an interest in nature will be enthralled by the wildlife and will love the variety of family-friendly activities on offer. There is something to suit all ages.

The lovely bungalows sleep 4 and most will accommodate an extra bed (or cot) and staff try to ensure families are located close to the main building. There are usually discounted rates for children.

Meal times are child-friendly with high-chairs available, helpful staff and a great kids menu.

  • location

Lapa Rios is located south of Puerto Jiménez at Playa Carbonera, on the south-eastern tip of the Osa Peninsula which is on the Pacific coast. The easiest way to get here is by light aircraft from San José - there are many scheduled services or for a group, it may be worth chartering a plane. The closest airport is Puerto Jiménez.  On arrival you will be met at Puerto Jiménez's airstrip by the hotel staff, and offered a cold drink ahead of your shared transfer which is included in the price. Private transfers are of course also available upon request for an extra charge.

The drive from San Jose is around 8 hours and notoriously rough on the last stretch so it isn’t recommended.
