The 153 rooms are divided into three categories - standard, view and suite. Even standard rooms are generously proportioned and can accommodate two adults and two children under 12 years old (on either two double beds for a family of four, or one king bed and one extra bed for triple occupancy). The hotel also has interconnecting rooms which can be requested at time of booking, and confirmed in advance depending on the season. Rooms feature smart lights and floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Culebra Bay and the surrounding forest. Bathrooms have large, rainfall showers that open onto the balcony and WiFi and TV are complimentary.

Activities include kayaking, paddle boarding and snorkelling, as well as tennis and golf at the Palmer signature golf course. Surfing and zip-lining are available slightly further afield. Culture lovers should pop in to the hotel’s Art Space, showcasing everything from indigenous Chorotega vases to contemporary work, and there are a number of galleries and museums nearby, including the Butterfly Gardens and Koss Art Gallery. For day trips with a dose of nature, don’t miss Rincón de la Vieja National Park, Monteverde Cloud Forest and Arenal Volcano, which are nearby. -

The open-air Río Bongo serves Latin food all day, including an enormous breakfast buffet that features a coffee bar and omelette station. The menu includes dishes ranging from “porkito” (pork burgers) to quesadillas and stuffed aubergine. It is also home to a great ceviche-making class several times per week. Chao Pescao is a relaxed, small plates bar with open terraces overlooking the sea. It serves craft beer and innovative cocktails, and small bites include cold meats and bruschetta. Open for lunch and dinner, Ostra is the most upmarket restaurant, serving excellent seafood, such as tuna ceviche and jumbo scallops. -

The international Liberia Airport is only a half-hour drive away, and the hotel offers an airport shuttle service (available on request). Taxis are also readily available from the airport with no reservations necessary, although guests looking for extra freedom should arrive by rental car. The grand entrance opens onto a fabulous arch framing the Pacific, and the hotel shares a secluded beach with its neighbour, the Four Seasons. -
