Tucked away at the end of an impressive drive, flanked by fragrant cypress and pine trees, there lies a magical, picture-book Medici summer villa now transformed into a luxurious and tranquil 5* hideaway. Formerly the summer hunting lodge of Leopold II, Duke of Tuscany, this charming Tuscan villa offers fine dining in a breathtaking Tuscan setting. The adjacent sister hotel, Casa Badiola, is a more modest option which works well for families. With a fantastic children's club on site, it is perfect for parents looking to unwind and take advantage of L'Andana's sumptuous facilities.

  • rooms

The 20 bedrooms and 13 suites are spread over 2 wings of this magnificent Tuscan property, connected by a beautiful winter garden lounge and lobby area. All rooms are tastefully furnished and offer the mod cons you'd expect from a 5* hotel while still maintaining a homely, private house feel. They feature lovely stone fireplaces and offer delightful views of the surrounding Tuscan countryside.

The elegant Superior Rooms overlook the vineyards or olive groves. Deluxe Rooms are more spacious and decorated with fine fabrics and antique furniture, some also boast a separate mezzanine level.

Why not opt for a sumptous suite? Each individually decorated and offering cosy fireplaces, a living area, gorgeous views, walk in wardrobes and opulent bathrooms (with baths large enough to do laps in). Or go all out in one of the Prestige Suites, with their large bedrooms, spacious living areas, double bathrooms with whirlpool baths and entrancing views of the romantic stone walled chapel and the bright blue sea.

  • facilities & activities

Relax by the tranquil outdoor heated pool whilst drinking in the breathtaking views of the ancient town of Castiglione della Pescaia. Surrounded by lovely spacious gardens, wooded hideaways and fragrant cypress trees, there is plenty of space for sunbathing or relaxing with a good book in complete peace and quiet. If you need a little more help to unwind then the gorgeous ESPA Spa will refresh and revitalise. Indulge in a combination of beauty and therapeutic treatments, sauna and steam rooms all set within an oasis of indoor/outdoor saltwater pools that overlook the gardens.

For the more energetic there is tennis and golf along with a host of exercise programmes. Hire bicycles and explore the verdant countryside - or go on horseback if you prefer. If you've been inspired by the wonderful cuisine, cookery classes are available with the in-house chef. Or strike a little further out and explore the Maremma Nature Park that stretches along the coast with its pretty inlets and bays, go kite surfing at the beach (the hotel can organise this for you) or just paddle in the cobalt blue waters. Many ancient, cobbled and beautiful Tuscan towns are an easy drive out, or explore the renaissance heaven that is Florence (just 2 hours away).

  • dining

La Villa is L'Andana's own restaurant. The kitchen has the cosy, informal atmosphere of a domestic kitchen and leads to an intimate dining room. For breakfast start your day with freshly baked doughnuts, brioches or cheesecakes complete with home made yoghurts, jams and marmalades, along with the usual traditional Italian fare of cheeses and meats. Fresh eggs prepared in a variety of different ways will be cooked exactly as you wish in front of you. La Villa also serves delicious lunches and dinners, with a menu that varies with the season. From June-September La Villa is closed for dinner but guests can dine at the estate's La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini - which won't disappoint!

Located in what used to be the ancient granary, La Trattoria Enrico Bartolini serves fine cuisine based on the principles of authenticity, simplicity and seasonality. Chef Enrico Bartolini's 'Contemporary Classic' style of cooking is centered around Tuscan traditions and recipes used by local families. Many ingredients including aromatic herbs, vegetables, wine and olive oil are produced from the gardens and cellar of Tenuta La Badiola.

  • family

While the peaceful setting at L'Andana is not ideal for super boisterous children, families are very welcome here and there are a great deal of activities to wear them out! The deluxe rooms offer a separate mezzanine level that can be turned into a small child's bedroom and there is plenty of space in the rooms. In addition one extra bed is allowed per room (although there is a charge for this).

However an excellent option for families is Casa Badiola, just steps away from L'Andana. Settle in and spread out in their spacious suites. These have separate living areas, interconnecting rooms and kitchenettes along with a private terrace if you are upstairs or scented gardens downstairs. Complete with peaceful pool, ping pong, pinball, tennis courts, horse riding and acres of gardens to run free the most difficult decision will be what to do next! You can even book a private family cooking class with one of the in-house chefs. Little ones are enthusiastically involved in preparing an appetizer, a main and a dessert or cake and will love enjoying fruits of their hard work with you at dinner that evening. Or leave them to it and book them into a 'Kids in the Kitchen Class' with their wacky themes. They'll be delighted with their own personal chef's hat, apron and notebook – and of course their own home cooked meal.

However, if you're in need of a little break then take advantage of the great kid's club and disappear off for a tranquil and luxury filled day at L'Andana – the facilities of which are all available to Casa Badiola guests. They'll be entertained from 10am until 7 pm if you'd like and will be kept busy with all manner of activities such as horse riding, work shops, splashing in the pool or they can draw and play in the sweet and modern purpose-built rooms. They can also plant flowers and vegetables in the kids-sized garden. Children under the age of 3 will need to be accompanied by a parent whereas the over-threes will be scooped away by the friendly staff.

There is a children's menu available and served in both restaurants or the chef will adapt anything for the menu if you wish. High chairs, cots, changing mats and soft toys are also easily accessible. Baby sitting is also available with 24 hours notice.

  • location

The villa lies in the heart of the Tuscan Maremma countryside with its heady Tuscan hues and rolling vistas that continue all the way to the sparkling sea. It's an easy (and beautiful) 2 hour drive from either Florence or Pisa, but the airports of Rome, Perugia and Bologna are also accessible, 2.5-3 hours drive away.

With picturesque Tuscan towns to explore such as Volterra, San Gimignano and Montepulciano we suggest hiring a car, alternatively the closest railway station is in Grosseto, only 18k from the estate. For the ultimate arrival experience why not drop in by helicopter!
