Hotel de l'Opera Hanoi - MGallery by Sofitel, Northern Vietnam
MenuIn a great central location, this gem of a hotel sits within view of the Grand Opera House and its velvet opulence certainly reflects this! You’d be forgiven for thinking you were in turn-of-the-century France; think huge chandeliers, heavy velvet curtains, guilt mirrors and old-school glamour – there are even black and white silent movies screening in the courtyard. However, it's just a 5-minute walk to bustling Hoan Kem Lake and the extraordinary Old Quarter (depending on the length of time it takes you to cross the road - part of the fun in Hanoi!). With interconnecting rooms available, restaurants and bars on the doorstep, it’s a great option for a family stay in this rather bonkers but brilliant city.

rooms
There are three room types here – all good options for a family. They are theatrical in style with heavy furnishings and the beds are so high you’ll need a step-ladder!
The Opera Grand Deluxe and the Suites are the best choice for family stays. An extra bed can be added to the Grand Deluxe rooms whilst the Suites are more like studios with large living areas and separate bedrooms.

facilities & activities
The main appeal is undoubtedly the pure theatrical glamour of the rooms and setting, and the facilities are merely the backdrop. There is a lovely spa and fitness centre plus a modest sized indoor-outdoor pool. While the pool isn’t ‘wow’, it is super refreshing after time spent exploring the frenetic streets of Hanoi and its position next to a lovely sundeck, with stunning views of the opera house, definitely merits a sun-downer when it lights up at dusk.

dining
Breakfast is a mix of buffet and a La Carte and with both continental and traditional Vietnamese dishes available. Kids are spoilt for choice with pancakes, waffles, bacon and eggs - perfect for satisfying teen appetites before a day spent out and about.
Café Lautrac then takes over for lunch inside with more a La Carte options or an easy Mediterranean-style buffet. The attached open courtyard is the in-house restaurant ‘Satine’ which prides itself on authentic Vietnamese dishes. It's slso the venue for a silent movie cinema in the evening, complete with atmospheric lighting and cosy corners. Alternatively, prop yourself at the lobby bar for a little ‘Moulin Rouge’ moment or two – the signature absinthe cocktail will have you high-kicking before you know it! Be warned!

family
Families are very welcome here. Its excellent location means you can explore easily without the worry of tired little legs, whilst teens will love the all too handy shopping extravaganza that is Hanoi.
Hoan Kemp Lake is teeming with Vietnamese families in the evenings and the carnival atmosphere is infectious.
There are interconnecting rooms and additional beds available in the rooms, with the Suites giving spacious accommodation with separate living and sleeping areas.

location
It’s the location that is the main win for this all-round fabulous hotel. Right in the middle of the lovely French Quarter, the delights of Hanoi are literally on the doorstep and the airport just a 30-minute drive away.
