Bushbaby Travel: Inspiring travel for life
Tongsai Bay

The Tongsai Bay, South East Thailand

bushbaby rating

This enchanting resort is a tranquil, jungle hideaway with a big heart. Perched on a hillside overlooking a stunning cove, it was built without damaging a single tree and this care and passion for nature and the people who stay here is evident throughout. The beautiful cottages and villas are scattered amongst the greenery and all offer spectacular sea views, whilst the private bay is quiet and unspoilt. However, it’s really the family-friendly atmosphere that puts it top of the list, as well as the warm friendly staff who have worked here for years and little thoughtful touches that ensure you feel extra special and relax that little bit more.

  • rooms

The Beachfront Suites are found nestled behind the pool with lovely sea views. Ground floor options have garden terraces with sun-loungers and direct gated-access to the pool while the upper floors can interconnect. Each can fit 2 adults and 2 children.

The Cottage Suites are set slightly higher up and are mostly semi-detached with a bedroom and living area. All have a slightly different design (aimed at maximising that glorious sea-view) with open air balconies, signature bath-with-view, dining table and sun-loungers. All can take 2 adults and 2 children. Cottage Suites are found nestled among the tropical gardens on the hillside, while Seafront Cottages are found ‘front row’ of the hill, overlooking the bay and are wonderfully private. The Pool Cottages have the addition of their own private plunge pools set into the large sunny terrace.

    Then there are the slightly larger cottage choices, each special in their own right;
The unique McGuigan Cottage is villa style with double bedroom, living space, large sea facing balcony with pool and a 4-poster gazebo to while away the days. It can easily fit 2 adults and 2 smaller children.

The lovely Hideaway Cottage is tucked away from the resort and has spectacular views from the terrace pool and a private island feel. Two adults and two children.

For those after a little more space, then the Viewpoint Family Cottage has it in spades. Ideal for a larger family, or families travelling with grandparents, this has two separate bedrooms, one a twin and one a double, plus two signature outdoor baths and a huge terrace with dining table.
Please note that the above two cottages are set high above the resort, and while the buggies can take you most of the way, there are steep steps to negotiate at the end. However, the sweeping views make up for the jaunt!

However, the Tongsai Pool Villas are really where it’s at. The ultimate in luxury; think stunning views, spacious terraces, 4 poster gazebos, dining areas, sun loungers and private pools nestled in the jungly hillside.
Seafront Pool Villas are first in line with plenty of space for 2 adults and 2 children, while the Nang Gong Villa has no less than two pools – the most difficult choice will be which view to choose! The Akorn Villa provides great space for a family with separate double and twin rooms (although please note the twin is on the lower deck on the same level as the pool so not suitable for very young children).

There is also the Governors Villa (special request only), these are two villas that can interconnect giving 2 double bedrooms either side and a twin in the centre. There are two private pools and huge terraces

  • facilities & activities

There is a large, fresh-water family pool that overlooks the beach with plenty of sun-loungers, parasols, side-tables and complimentary water. And even more happily, a simple wave of your flag will bring the butler running for any other drinks you fancy from the bar. For the older kids and adults, the half-moon pool, set halfway up the hill with wonderful views, provides a peaceful sanctuary. There are complimentary paddle boards and kayaks, while the catamaran and windsurfing boards are provided alongside basic instructions and supervision from the friendly staff. The beach is pristine and waters warm and calm but please do note that the water gets deep quickly.
For the more energetic there is a gym, a tennis court, a yoga room and then a beautiful spa to rejuvenate and relax in afterwards. The resort also hosts a once-weekly film show on the beach and music performances including a ‘old -school’ style crooner and live band. For those that fancy an explore further afield, then the Tour Desk can advise and book day trips and organise car hire and taxis for you.
  • dining

The in-house restaurant Chef Chom’s offers traditional Thai feasts, with recipes taken from all parts of the country served up with seasonal, organic and fresh ingredients. Po-Lad Bistro on the beach has international options and the beach-side bar next door is lovely for a sundowner beforehand. Breakfast offers plenty of choice for all tastes and the juice bar serves up freshly made juices that provide a real zing to the day.

  • family

It’s an excellent choice for a family and all ages are welcome. The Beachfront Suites are located at the bottom of the hill and handily are right beside the pool. These can also interconnect providing plenty of space for a family of 5. The villas are higher up but offer two and three bedrooms with additional beds available. While there is no kids club as such, there is an air-conditioned play room complete with PlayStation, bean-bags and board games. Babysitting is also available.

  • location

The Tongsai Bay sits on the only private bay on this northern stretch of Koh Samui, just 10 minutes from Chaweng Beach, 10 minutes from Fisherman’s Village and 10 minutes from the airport.

The lovely lush setting is a key attraction for guests, but do make sure you take plenty of insect repellent as the mosquitos like it too!
