Setting
  • rooms

This is comfortable camping at its best and the mountain-river setting is idyllic.

There are four tents on stilted platforms set out over the river and all have authentic thatched roofs to keep you warm and dry. The interiors are cosy and simple with twin beds (which can be configured as a double), mosquito netting and small side tables. If you prefer solid walls, there are six wooden cabins that have recently been refurbished. Three side walls can be opened during the day and then closed for privacy at night. Have a well earned drink on your private terrace and enjoy the breathtaking view.

If you want or need a little more space, there are two wooden chalets with attached bathrooms. These are also set high on stilts with spectacular views and have twin beds, bathrooms and open-air showers. Or, for a real back-to-nature experience, you can bathe in the river instead.

  • facilities & activities

Start the day with a peaceful coffee on your private deck as you listen to the sounds of the river below. Then, launch into an action-packed day on its waters. The campsite offers all manner of thrills and spills with kayaking, canoeing, rafting and canyoning on offer. The reputable adventure tour company has extensive experience with outdoor activities and follows strict safety guidelines, always with an emphasis on nature conservation. Alongside the exhilarating choices on offer, you'll enjoy breathtaking scenery all around with mountains, rain-forest and, of course, tea and rubber plantations.

  • dining

Chef Bandula serves up a feast of fragrant Sri Lankan curries each evening in The Long House. There are also International dishes for those who want a break from curry and the chef will happily adapt any of his dishes to suit. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style with a plentiful options and, of course, the much appreciated tea and cake in the afternoon. In the evening, as the sun sets, enjoy your sun-downer as you take in the views below.

  • family

Children are welcome here and will love the camping and tropical setting. The activities are all well supervised and suitable for children aged 6+ ensuring days are fun filled and action packed. Back at the camp, supervised swimming is allowed in the river and they'll love toasting marshmallows over the campfire.

The buffet style eating provides plenty of choice for smaller ones and the wooden cabins are ideal for a family - easily accommodating three to five people.

Please note that whilst the setting is extraordinary, it isn't ideal for babies, toddlers and younger children. It is also worth highlighting that many cabins (but not all) do not have a private or en-suite bathroom and instead there are communal washrooms.

  • location

Borderlands is found in the little town of Kitulagala in the western foothills between the west coast and the central highlands of Sri Lanka. The town is famed for its white-water rafting and jungle adventure.

The historical sites of Kandy or Hatton are around 1.5 – 2.5 hours away, so the camp is a great stop-off point between the two. If you are heading straight from the airport, the drive is around 3 hours.
