Borneo Rainforest Lodge

Borneo Rainforest Lodge, Borneo

bushbaby rating

Follow in the footsteps of one of the world’s most loved naturalists and stay amongst the pristine wilderness of this corner of Borneo. Maybe it was the huge diversity of wildlife and exotic flora in the rich forests, perhaps the panoramic views of beautiful river Danum, the wonderful wooden walkways in the canopies, or even the first rate dining and luxurious accommodation that brought Sir David Attenborough here, but whatever was on the checklist, we are certain that this private and exclusive eco-lodge firmly ticked all the boxes as it will for you.

Borneo Rainforest Lodge
  • rooms

Built very much with its surrounds in mind the lodge has impressive eco-friendly credentials. With just 30 wooden chalets sited near the main lodge there is a welcoming and intimate atmosphere. Opt for either River View or Jungle View - both offer large comfortable rooms with en-suite bathrooms and a small fridge which is re-stocked daily. The deluxe versions of these have private balconies and oversized baths which enjoy spectacular views.

For a little more luxury there are also the Premium View Chalets - one double and two single storey, all of which have spacious viewing decks, panoramic views and private hot tubs – perfect after a day exploring.

  • facilities & activities

The setting, deep within the largest protected area of undisturbed lowland forest on the island, is a bird watchers paradise and the sheer jagged valleys are home to a myriad of exotic wildlife, elephants, proboscis monkeys and the playful orangutan as well as the tribal people who still practice the ancient ways of life here.

Given the unique setting and, safe in the hands of knowledgeable, friendly guides the lodge is renowned for its naturalist tours. There are plenty of trails from the door step or further afield out into the untouched rainforest. Tube down the Danum River, take a river boat trip to see the stunning waterfalls or climb through the treetops and explore the canopies above via the 26m high walkway - allegedly the most spectacular in Sabah. Night walks or vehicle drives are available to spot those creatures who prefer to party after dark.

There are plunge pools and a spa for those needing a touch of luxury after a day of adventuring plus a shop for snacks, souvenirs and leech socks (well, it can’t always be non-stop glamour...) along with a daily laundry service and WIFI in the restaurant and bar.

  • dining

Despite the remote location, the lodge is entirely self-sufficient with a well-stocked bar and beautiful central dining area that overlooks the rainforest. Meals are buffet style, freshly prepared and offer a huge selection of Malay-style dishes made up of rice and noodles (including vegetarian choices) followed by fresh fruit and desserts.

  • family

It’s a great place to bring the family. Children and teens interested in wildlife, or indeed, Indiana Jones-style adventure, will enjoy experiences that they won’t forget in a hurry -whether it’s spotting monkeys, hurling themselves in a tube down the river, or taking one of the night safaris, they’ll be happily occupied from dawn until dusk. However, although the location is the main attraction, it does mean that it is not suitable for very young children.

There are twin and triple rooms available which provide plenty of space for a family. They might quite like the personal plunge pool too.......

  • location

The Lodge is located on the banks of the Danum River, well and truly off the beaten track, deep in the middle of the rainforest. It is top of the list for those wanting to see the exotic wildlife in Borneo and the remote location guarantees the best views. It’s a 55 minute flight from Kota Kinabalu International Airport to the nearest town of Lahad Datu and then a bumpy 2 hour drive to the lodge on rough roads – but every bump is worth it for the once-in-a-life-time sightings.
