Iwaso Ryokan

Iwaso Ryokan, Hiroshima & Miyajima

Menu

Set beside the famous Itsukushima Shrine with its floating torii gate, Iwaso Ryokan blends traditional Japanese style with relaxing rooms, wonderful views and fantastic food. Feel like royalty from the moment you slip on your slippers at the entrance to this onsen ryokan, which was once a teahouse for passersby. Soak in an open-air hot spring bath while watching deer pass through thick forest surrounding you, or eat sumptuous sushi from the comfort of your room. You could happily spend your whole time inside the ryokan’s serene gates, but if you step outside there’s much to discover on Miyajima Island and Hiroshima across the water.

Iwaso Ryokan
  • rooms

Spread across three wings, the 39 rooms are a mixture of Honkan rooms, Shinkan rooms and Hanare Cottages. The Honkan rooms are located in a two-storey building that does not have internet access and some rooms feature shared bathroom facilities. A stay in a lovely Hanare cottage will set you back the most – tucked away in the trees, these feature red lacquer tables, tatami mats and private indoor baths.

  • facilities & activities

Since it was opened in 1854, this ryokan’s star attraction has been its hot spring, Wakamiya hot spring, set amidst exquisite gardens. Not all rooms have private baths, but you can wallow in the onsen in the main building. There is (limited) free parking available for guests, as well as a number of meeting rooms, free internet access and a 24-hour front desk.

  • dining

The traditional ryokan experience involves dining in-room rather than in a restaurant, though there is a restaurant with a few low tables where breakfast is served. The “kaiseki” (traditional multi-course Japanese meal) is made with fresh ingredients from both the sea and the mountains. Highlights include beautifully-presented oysters and conger eel, and breakfasts of steamed fluffy rice, miso soup and grilled fish. Breakfast and dinner are included in the rates and can be made Western-style.

  • location

Iwaso Ryokan is ideally positioned beside Itsukushima Shrine. It’s around a 15-minute walk to the ferry port (which connects you to Hiroshima on Honshu Island mainland) or a pick-up can be organised.
