Elephant at Azura Selous

Southern Safari Circuit, Tanzania

If you are looking for a more intimate safari experience, then Selous and Ruaha are right for you. They are also ideal for a combined visit to Zanzibar.

Elephant at Azura Selous

Selous, is Africa’s largest game reserve, twice the size of Kruger National Park. With a vast and thriving wildlife, its ecosystem comprises forests and woodlands surrounding the lagoons and sandbanks of the Rufiji River. Unlike the other National Parks, Selous offers the option of both walking and boating safaris and most camps will arrange fly-camping nights out in the bush. Wildlife attracted to the banks of the river includes elephants, lions, buffalo, leopards, crocodile and wild dog.

Like Tarangire, Ruaha is at its best during the dry season (June-October) due to the attraction of water from The Great Ruaha River, the Mwagusi, Mdonya and Jongomero Sand Rivers. This makes the area a focal point for large numbers of animals during the heat of the day. Ruaha also holds Africa’s greatest population of elephant and is the only East African park with both Greater and Lesser Kudu, and sable and roan antelopes. The game viewing is superb including regular interaction between the buffalo and lion on the banks of the Mwagusi Sand and the Great Ruaha River. Due to its size, Ruaha is recommended for a minimum 3 day visit.

And what better way to end your adventure holiday by unwinding on some of Tanzania’s best beaches on the island of Zanzibar. The northern and eastern beaches with powder white sand and crystal clear shallow waters are great for kids. So whether you choose to simply unwind, or take in a little bit of Zanzibar’s historic Swahili culture in the ancient capital of the sultans, the choice is yours.
