Kaskaz Mara Camp, Northern Safari Circuit

With only eight luxury tented suites, this camp is highly sought after because of its’ wonderful location and excellent value.  Each tented suite has large netted windows and draped roofing for Serengeti-style air conditioning, cotton curtains weave in the cooling breeze, oversized beds, indoor and out-door furnishings of style, expansive floor space, great hardwood double vanities, hand carved decor with Swahili flair and a hammock to boot.

All rooms have private en-suite bathrooms where you will have eco-friendly flush loo and classic safari style shower. Let the staff know in advance of when you wish to shower and they will ensure hot water for your safari shower.

There is no electricity in the rooms, and therefore no hair-dryers, but you are able to charge your camera batteries at the charging station in the public areas.

The main reason for visiting this area is because of the Wildebeest Migration and the chance of having that Attenborough moment when you see herds up to 10,000 strong take that giant leap into the river and swim across to the other side.  Apart from the Wildebeest, you may be fortunate enough to see some endangered Black Rhino, Lion, Leopard, Cheetah, Giraffe, Buffalo and Elephant and plenty plains game. It is possible to even see the Big 5 up here alone! 

The primary mode of game viewing here is by 4x4 Toyota open-roof top Landcruiser, which gives you a great deal more space and freedom to look at the wildlife with a 360 degree view when standing on your seat looking out around you.  The emphasis therefore will be on game drives as this way you can cover greater distances and safely get closer to the big game without them being felt threatened.

In addition there are opportunities to explore the wilderness on foot with their in-house armed walking guides; follow the tracks, smell the herds on the breeze and hear the crunch of fauna underfoot.  Or perhaps treat yourself to a sunrise balloon safari with champagne breakfast!

It’s safe to note that no-one in the bush will ever go hungry and a 7 day menu means even if you're lucky enough to stay a week, original feasts to tempt you will appear from the bush kitchen. Not even those with super specialist diets (provided you tell us at time of booking of any special requirements).

You start your day with breakfast and here you will have a self-service option of continental style breakfast with cereals, local seasonal fruits, breads and pastries with marmalade and jams. Tea, coffee, hot chocolate and juice will be offered.  There will also be an a la carte selection of items you can order from your waiter, including beef sausage or beef bacon, prepared eggs, grilled tomato and crepes or rolled oat porridge.

Lunch can be either a picnic lunch (if on all day game drive) or as is most often the case, you will return too camp late morning for lunch here. The menu changes daily, but usually includes some freshly made bread, main course will include a vegetarian and non-vegetarian option which will be followed by fruit or cake for desert.

Park regulations stipulate that all guests must be back in camp by sunset. You’ll have time to freshen up under the stars, before gathering around the camp fire for pre-dinner drinks where you can sit and watch the bush television and listen to the sounds of the night and share game sightings of that day.

location

Open between 1 July and 31 October each year, this seasonal camp can be found in the Lamai Ridge, part of the Mara Triangle in the far north Serengeti in Tanzania. This Serengeti side of the river, offers a more intimate and less hectic game viewing by comparison with the Masai Mara National Park, located across the river.

Access to Kaskaz can be by road as part of a longer privately driven and guided overland safari where you explore the southern and central areas of the Serengeti, slowly making your way north to this pristine and remote corner of the Serengeti.  However, most commonly, guests will arrive by bush into Kogatende airstrip plane originating in either Arusha (2 ½ hrs) or on inducement (min 3 persons), from Nairobi International Airport (journey time is approx. 2h10 mins)
