On a leafy road just a short stroll from the historical village centre of Franschhoek, you will find Akademie Street, a charming home from home in the heart of the Winelands (please note no under 16s allowed). Each of the unique guesthouses at Akademie are hidden away behind high hedges, which wrap around the gardens and pools, offering privacy and seclusion for all guests. Winding paths run through an enchanting garden with ancient oak, fruit trees and fragrant flowers, converging on Twyfeling, the Cape Dutch main residence, which also incorporates a charming library and dining area.

    Akademie Street offers charming guest cottages nestled in tranquil gardens each with a private swimming pool. There are also three suites; two at either end of the gracious Cape Dutch style main house (Twyfeling A and Twyfeling B) and one in a freestanding building adjacent to this (Uitsig). These suites share a large solar-heated pool. All have been decorated with an appealing mix of antique and contemporary furnishings which add to the home-from-home feel of this intimate guesthouse.

    Oortuiging A & B

    These two suites are housed in the historic Oortuiging cottage dating back to 1865 and include a cosy snug and wood burning stove. The cream and tan interiors provide the perfect backdrop for the dark, decadent wooden canopy bed and antique furniture. A free standing hand made copper bath, positioned under a tented style low ceiling continues the campaign theme. An extra length king size bed, separate shower, underfloor heating and a private wood burning hot tub deliver the remaining touches to this most elegant of suites. The cottages also boast their own courtyard and private pool, and private access to the main gardens in which guests can enjoy a peaceful moment in the sunshine.



    Spacious and airy, Uitsig is a firm favourite with guests thanks to its elevated position and peaceful ambiance. A luxurious suite on the upper floor of one of the hotel’s main buildings, Uitsig is accessed by a private staircase and has an extremely generous bedroom and living area. The suite also boasts a private first floor terrace, with uplifting views off the nearby Franschhoek mountains which are bathed in a red glow with evening sunshine. The terrace is accessed through French doors that flood the room with light and mountain air. Uitsig is refined yet indulgent, from the sumptuous extra length kingsize bed draped in high quality linens, to the decadent marble bathroom and underfloor heating. One of the most private suites Uitsig also benefits from direct private access to the main gardens, including the heated pool and jacuzzi.


    Twyfeling A & B & C
    These three suites are located in the the hotel’s central building, an elegant Cape Dutch Manor House. The suites are bright and airy, with a blend of antique furniture, sumptuous soft furnishings and a wood burning stove. Twyfeling A enjpys a private courtyard and Twyfeling B & C share a courtyard - all have vintage patio furniture and wall fountains where one can enjoy a glass of local wine. With a luxurious extra length king size bed, free standing vintage style bath, separate shower, underfloor heating and soothing palette they offer a relaxing haven. Venture across the corridor to the hotel’s main lounge to explore the library, tinkle the ivories of our heritage baby grand piano, or sit by the open fire in our main courtyard. It's up to you! You also have private access to the main gardens, including the heated pool and jacuzzi.

    Gelatenheid A
    One of two suites in our Cape Dutch style cottage, the largest cottage on site. This is a plush one bedroom suite on the first floor, complete with separate dressing room and luxurious free standing bath. Indulgence continues with the private sun drenched balcony and outdoor fireplace, with cosy seating. The balcony also features a discreetly positioned outdoor wood burning hot tub, made from vintage brandy barrels from which to make the most of the scenic vistas all around, whether in the sun or under the stars. A country chic charm throughout, this suite has an extra length king size bed with our signature luxe bedding to ensure utter comfort throughout your stay. Cool off in Gelatenheid’s moroccan mosaic plunge pool or wood burning hot tub (seats 4) or simply enjoy a peaceful moment on the pool loungers in the cottage’s secluded courtyard. It's up to you!

    Gelatenheid B
    Lose yourself in the wonderful Cape Dutch charm of our Gelatenheid B suite, one of two suites that make up Gelatenheid cottage, our largest cottage on site. Luxury and relaxation are the signatures of the suite’s interiors, with country chic whites, creams and tans. The bedroom suite is generous with an extra length king size bed and signature handmade linens. It also incorporates a free standing vintage style bath. The spacious living and dining areas are designed for relaxation and ease, flooded with light from elegant French doors and intuitively equipped with an outdoor fireplace and a private wood burning hot tub. Step outside into the Franschhoek sunshine and take a dip in Gelatenheid’s moroccan mosaic plunge pool or simply curl up on the shady loungers. Gelatenheid B is perfect for privacy, with a separate entrance to the hotel gardens, as well as the main street

    Twyfeling, the main residence, houses a relaxing lounge with television and a library area with a good selection of books - perfect for unwinding in the evening after a day spent exploring.

    Three of the cottages have their own private garden and swimming pool and the other three share a large solar-heated pool.

    Your hosts, Katherine and Arthur, are on hand to help you make the most of your stay and there are no shortage of nearby activities to choose from, most within minutes of the hotel. The breathtaking Franschhoek Valley lies between nature reserves and mountain peaks in one of the most scenic parts of the Western Cape. Safe, peaceful and easy to travel to, the town of Franschhoek is the perfect base from which to explore the vast natural beauty of this part of the world, as well as the mouthwatering intensity of South Africa’s culinary heartland. Spend your time at the spa, horse riding, hiking or fly fishing, explore the valley museums and galleries or play a few rounds of golf on some of the most picturesque greens in the world. Relaxation is inevitable.

    Breakfast is generally served on the terrace (weather permitting), conservatory or inside dining areas.

    In the evening, consider joining your fellow guests for the complimentary local wine tasting before dinner - it's a lovely chance to relax and find out more about the area.

    Although Akademie Street doesn't serve lunch or dinner, part of Franschhoek's appeal is its enviable reputation as South Africa's gourmet capital,boasting nearly 40 restaurants, 8 of which are in the top 100 restaurants in the country. The quaint sidewalk cafes and shops dotted along the High Street offer the perfect way to pass a morning or afternoon in this peaceful town.
