The stunning and extremely scenic Drakensberg Mountains or ‘Ukhahlamba’ (Barrier of Spiers in Zulu) offer walks, fishing, horse riding and the opportunity to view ancient Rock Art. The province was also the venue for some of the most famous Anglo, Boer and British conflicts with Battlefields including Rorke’s Drift, Spioenkop and Isandlwana. The coastline offers a host of stunning beaches where visitors can experience warm coastal waters, excellent surfing and some of the best diving in South Africa. Nature also abounds with dolphins visible year round, turtle nesting in the Summer and the great ‘Sardine Run’, usually taking place around June.

Further North some excellent game reserves offer big five viewing whilst the iSimangaliso (Greater St Lucia) Wetland Park, spanning 280km of coastline from the Mozambican border, has been proclaimed a world heritage site for its rich biodiversity with ecosystems ranging from coral reefs to subtropical dune forests and savannas. Please note these more remote areas are malarial.
