Bisate Lodge

Bisate Lodge, Rwanda

bushbaby rating

Situated just outside the Volcanoes National Park, Bisate Lodge is a sight to behold. The beautifully designed thatched villas that make up the resort are based on the former Royal Palace in Nyanza. Inside, concrete floors, exposed brick walls and open fireplaces are complemented by traditional ‘kitenge’ basketware, cowhide rugs, and recycled green glass bottle chandeliers. You can also opt to join the in-house guide on nature walks around the property and to meet the local villagers.

Bisate Lodge
  • rooms

Six gorgeous, en-suite forest villas sit hidden amidst the greenery with phenomenal views and an eco-conscious design that blends perfectly with the surroundings. Walls are clad with grass matting, cowhide rugs are spread across the floors in front of log-burning fires and bamboo balconies overlook Mount Bisoke. Bathrooms are generously sized, with large resin bathtubs and walk-in showers. There are no televisions in the rooms but there is Wi-Fi.

  • facilities & activities

There are plenty of opportunities to discover the area’s wildlife with guided nature walks around the property. To explore further afield, a full-day guided hike to the summit of Mount Bisoke offers sweeping views of the rainforest and crater lake. Of course, gorillas are the stars of the show here, and you can spot them on one-hour gorilla treks, which depart from the Volcanoes National Park headquarters.

The lodge can also organise cultural activities. You can meet nearby villagers, including the farmers who grow and sell vegetables to Bisate. The lodge’s agronomist, Jean-Moise, can show you around his tree nursery – and help you plant a tree before you leave (part of the hotel’s reforestation project). Massage treatments are also available at the lodge. The small size of the lodge – with just six villas – ensures service is friendly and personable.

  • dining

Made-to-order meals are eaten in the restaurant or adjoining terrace, and you’ll find complimentary cookies and drinks in individual rooms. The quality of food is excellent - dishes range from homemade ragu pasta and fresh pizzas to mango salad with pineapple and chilli dressing. A highlight of your stay will be the pre-dinner cocktail hour, where you can cosy up in front of the fire with expertly crafted drinks. For breakfast, choose from a buffet spread featuring Greek yoghurt with Rwandan honey and pastries, or cooked-to-order hot dishes.

  • family

Children aged 15 and above are welcome at Bisate Lodge (the minimum age for gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park is 15 years).
