Kasbah du Toubkal

Kasbah du Toubkal, The Atlas Mountains

bushbaby rating

In the heart of Toubkal National Park, this is a little slice of heaven, nestling amongst imposing mountain scenery.  More than a guest house, Kasbah du Toubkal’s charm and great appeal is the opportunity to experience genuine Berber hospitality in a captivating setting. If you are looking for simple pleasures in a beautiful, away-from-it-all location, this is the perfect anecdote to modern life.

Kasbah du Toubkal
  • rooms

The Superior and Deluxe Rooms are simple and traditionally styled with en-suite bathroom, comfortable beds and hot water. The charming Deluxe Rooms also benefit from a private terrace or balcony. The Garden House can be booked on an exclusive basis or as individual suites. If the latter, we definitely recommend you consider the Apartment Suite which has a wonderful living area set around a cosy wood burning stove and stunning views from a wall of glass to the mountains upstairs and an en-suite bedroom downstairs.  The suite can be configured to interconnect with the Junior Suite, which has a bedroom, salon and terrace and/or a Superior Room.

  • facilities & activities

Situated in the heart of the mountains, the Kasbah offers the perfect place to explore the striking scenery. Guided walks are offered to all guests as part of their stay and day or overnight treks can be arranged, including the ascent of the Jbel Toubkal (4167m).  There is of course the traditional Hammam, several comfortable sitting rooms or ‘salons’ where you can relax around a roaring wood burner. There is also a small library of books, music and board games.

  • dining

Generous portions of un-pretentious but well prepared food such as chicken and lamb tagine, couscous, potatoes and vegetables are served alongside olives and the most delicious Berber bread, followed by fruit and biscuits for desert. Often served by candlelight around traditional low tables in the evening or on the roof top terrace if weather permits, this is arguably one of the most beautiful dining settings in North Africa. Guest staying at the Apartment also have the option to have their meals there.

Please note that menus are fixed and that alcohol is not served in respect of the local Islamic traditions, but you are welcome to bring your own (and many do!) in which case you might like to purchase some whilst in Marrakech.

  • family

This is a wonderful and rare opportunity to introduce children to a fascinating and friendly culture. The lovely organised walks are suitable for all ages and abilities. Less able guests or young children might enjoy travelling by mule as an alternative. A variety of accommodation options are available, but we highly recommend The Apartment for families. Although babysitters can be arranged in advance, the Kasbah is not really suitable for children under the age of 2.

  • location

Located on the slopes of Jbel Toubkal, the highest peak in the Atlas Mountains, known as the "roof of North Africa", Kasbah du Toubkal is truly unique. Formerly the summer house of a local baron, it has been restored using traditional Berber techniques by the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. The village of Imlil is accessible by a paved road but access to the Kasbah is 10 minutes from the centre only by foot or on the back of a mule (the Berber Mercedes!).
