Easter Sun in Cyprus, Europe Blog

Like many people, I can never quite make it through the British winter without the lure of some guaranteed sunshine on the horizon....much as I love the UK in summer, Easter is altogether more hit and miss for sunshine and the prospect of a swim in British waters in April is not terribly appealing even on a good day, fully kitted out in dry suits. So, for the last few years, our family of 4 have escaped to somewhere altogether more reliably warm. This year we chose Cyprus. More southerly than its Greek neighbours, it has an enviable 320+ days of sunshine a year. So, what's it like at Easter? Well, you can definitely pack shorts, 't'shirts and swim suits - daytime temperatures ranged from early to very late 20s over the two weeks we were there. Breakfast al fresco? Tick. Sunbathing? Tick. Warm enough for ice-cream? Tick. Swimming? You probably want to look for a hotel or villa with a heated pool, as only the children were brave enough to plunge into the unheated pool. Sea temperatures are still on the chilly side too, but if you want to snorkel, most activity operators will provide you with wet suits and a very pleasant afternoon can be had by all. For history buffs or anyone wanting to explore the many fantastic archaelogical sites in Cyprus, the moderate day time temperatures are a definite plus point - afternoon sight-seeing would be fairly arduous in the heat of high summer but at Easter it was perfect. In the evenings, whilst still pleasantly warm, it does cool down quickly so take a cover-up, cardigan or jumper and long trousers are probably best. Most cafes and restaurants still serve food al fresco for dinner and some have heaters, but, even without, we found it was fine most evenings - distracted as we were by courtyard tables groaning with delicious meze, sweet local wine and accompanied by the relaxing sound of the bouzouki....
