winter sun
It might be cold and dark in the UK but there's sunny beaches and summer to be found just a flight away...

Maldives
The driest months of January through to April are considered the best months to visit the magical Maldives. If diving and snorkelling are on your agenda, visit in January for clear waters and warm, sunshine-filled days on the beach. However, Christmas aside, there are advantages to travelling slighly off-peak; the chance to see whale sharks and manta rays in October and November and often some great hotel offers in early December.

Mexico
With the hurricane season coming to an end in November, December through to April are great months for a family holiday to Mexico, with temperatures coolest in December and January. Soak up the culture and for some fabulous whale-watching, head to Baja California between January and March to spot humpbacks as well as blue and grey whales.

South Africa
With overnight flights and a 2 hour time difference (no jet lag!), you'll be swapping winter for summer in South Africa. Enjoy time by the pool, visit the penguins at Boulders Bay and take a trip up Table Mountain. If you can squeeze in a 2 night safari, voila - you have the ultimate family adventure! Costs are dependent on accommodation choice, but with family cottages from £100 a night, it offers good value.
