The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon

This 14-storey hotel is city chic personified. Set inside a former office building in Asakusa, Tokyo’s old “pleasure district”,  it was given a complete design overhaul by the Japanese architect Shigeru Uchida and opened in 2012 with style in spades.

Lobby areas have cool touches like circular seating, contemporary chandeliers and floor-to-ceiling windows, while the bedrooms are individually designed – a monochrome colour scheme here, a printed wallpaper there. It’s perfect for a sophisticated stay in Tokyo’s atmospheric East side.

Facilities & Activities

Live entertainment performances are held on the last day of each month. Staff are extremely polite and helpful, and there is a room service, laundry service and Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. A supermarket and pharmacy are located downstairs.

R, a slick restaurant and bar, serves Western cuisine with a French flare. The atmosphere is on the sultry side, with low lighting, dark wood flooring and large windows overlooking the Tokyo skyline, including the Tokyo Skytree. There’s even a grand piano in the corner, which comes alive during monthly entertainment evenings. Dine at table with leather seats, or choose the wooden bar or outdoor sun terrace.

Dishes include onion gratin soup, sirloin steak and assorted cold meats. Set lunches and dinners are available, or order a la carte. For breakfast, start with the “vegetable station” buffet before moving onto cooked options such as eggs benedict and French toast. There is also B bar, an intimate area with a terrace on the 14th floor.

With floors and walls of charcoal grey or bottle green, brightened up with pops of red fabric art, the rooms are contemporary and comfortable, with views of either Sensoji or Tokyo Skytree. The smallest category – called “Modest” – fits a double bed and writing desk while an “Authentic” room has an additional seating area. The most luxurious room is The Gate, a suite exclusively designed by Shigeru Uchida. Sleeping 2 guests, it features plush blue carpets and printed wallpaper in the spacious living area and bedroom.

Families are best suited in an “Essential” room, which can be made up as a double, twin or a triple and can be booked as interconnecting rooms. There is one pair of interconnecting rooms on each floor (between floors 4 and 11). Please request connecting rooms at time of booking.

The hotel structure is built to support energy efficiency, which includes a time lag air conditioning system that utilises solar energy. CO2 emissions have been decreased by 31% through LED lights, water saving equipment and windows that facilitate ventilation.

You’ll be perfectly placed to explore Tokyo with The Gate Hotel Kaminarimon as your base. Step outside and discover the atmospheric Eastern Asakusa district, where the city’s merchants and artisans lived during feudal times. This area, in eastern Tokyo, retains much of that old Edo spirit thanks to its ancient temples and craft shops. The hotel sits directly opposite the Thunder Gate entrance (Kaminarimon) of Sensoji, the city’s oldest temple. You can also stroll to Tokyo Skytree, which opened in 2010 and is the world’s tallest tower.
