Parador has much to offer before you even step outside its serene grounds. The main pool is family-friendly, with views out to sea and a swim-up bar. For something more exclusive, adult guests staying at the Ocean Vista building can dip in its infinity pool, which is complete with a waterfall and jacuzzi.

Those keen to explore on foot are also well placed – the hotel is surrounded by 12 acres of tropical forest and hiking trails, with opportunities to spot everything from sloths and monkeys to colourful toucans. Biesanz Beach is only a ten-minute stroll from the hotel. It features pristine white sand and its small waves are safe for swimming and snorkelling. Children will love spotting marine life, such as dolphins and sea turtles. For surfing, kayaking and parasailing, Espadilla Norte is a good option, and easily accessed via the hotel shuttle bus.

Set amidst lush greenery, the Pacifica Spa feels calming and rejuvenating. It features four treatment rooms, a manicure and pedicure zone, a jacuzzi, a sauna, a cold water plunge pool and relaxation and yoga areas. There is also a small gym and private yoga lessons can be arranged.

The hotel has a miniature golf course in the gardens that work well as a family activity. There is also a shop selling local crafts and clothing as well as a store for snacks and souvenirs.

Dining

From breakfast buffets to à la carte dinners, Parador has numerous dining options to suit all tastes. La Galeria is the main restaurant, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. It has an airy feel, with beamed ceilings, white colonnades and pot plants aplenty. Expect dishes with a Mediterranean slant, as well as Costa Rican favourites such as ‘gallo pinto’ (rice and beans). The coffee is strong and local, and there is a good range of vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options.

La Reina offers an intimate dining experience with gourmet dishes created by head chef Rodrigo Salazar, while the swim-up pool bar is ideal for relaxed lunches, light bites and tropical cocktails. For panoramic views, La Fragata, is an open-air restaurant located on the top floor of the Ocean Vista Suites building. This is the place to enjoy fresh seafood as you feel a gentle ocean breeze at lunch or to clink glasses and watch the sunset in the evening.

There is also a mediaeval-style wine cellar that accommodates up to four people and works for a romantic dinner, plus a cosy lounge bar with a happy hour and sports TV. The Gourmet Room is also available for private function hire for up to 36 guests.

Rooms

Spread across four separate buildings, the 130 rooms and suites offer a range of accommodation options. All are elegantly styled with cream walls and dark wood furnishings and feature ocean, jungle or garden views and either a balcony or terrace. The 25 Garden Rooms lead directly into the lush grounds, while the 28 Tropical Rooms are located on the second or third floors and overlook the gardens. There are also 12 Premium Rooms with large sliding doors and superb sea and jungle views.

The suites are a cut above, offering ample space and added luxuries such as expansive balconies with private jacuzzis, plasma TVs and fully equipped kitchens. The Penthouse is located on the top floor of the Ocean Vista building and has two balconies with 360-degree views of Manuel Antonio National Park and the nearby beaches.

Family

All room types can accommodate two adults and two children sharing two queen-size beds. Families seeking more space and a homestay feel should consider a suite. The Family Suite is uber luxurious and features three ensuite bedrooms, including one with a magnificent four-poster bed. It’s also conveniently located in the main building, with direct access to restaurants. Another option for families of up to six is La Casita. Offering a homely feel with all the amenities of a resort, it has three guest rooms and its own kitchen and a large terrace.

Sustainability

Parador has a green philosophy throughout the resort and is certified as sustainable by the Costa Rican Tourism Board, reaching the highest level (elite). The resort has also received the Ecological Blue Flag for “Actions Against Climate Change”. The resort’s sustainable initiatives include replacing lights with energy-efficient lighting, changing the water-pumping station and air conditioning units to more efficient models and replacing cooling chambers in the kitchen with environment-friendly systems.

Location

The hotel is located on Costa Rica’s Pacific coastline, in Manuel Antonio (near the town of Quepos). It’s a three-hour drive through the mountains and along the coast from San José, or you can take a 20-minute domestic flight to Quepos Regional Airport from San José. Located high up on the Punta Quepos, the resort enjoys a prime position inside the Manuel Antonio National Park with the coast within easy reach.
