Kulala Desert Lodge

Exclusive access to the towering dunes of Sossusvlei is just one of the perks of this family-friendly desert retreat.

Guests can get a headstart on the tourist buses through a private gate that leads directly onto this remarkable landscape. Add to that sweeping desert views, an array of activities and sleepouts under the stars and you’re in for a spellbinding stay in the Namibian wilderness.

Facilities & Activities

The desert is brought to life by excellent guides with in-depth knowledge of the local flora and fauna – which includes springbok, oryx and black-backed jackal. Guided nature walks and drives leave the lodge and venture into the remote landscape, with coffee stops en route.

You could also visit neighbouring Dead Vlei and hike along Sesriem Canyon. The Tsauchab River Trail offers easy hiking right from the doorstep of your lodge. Another option is to sip sundowners atop a mountain with epic desert panoramas – or take it even higher and watch it all from a hot air balloon. Other activities include exploring the plains on electric fat bikes (a favourite with families) or simply sleeping on your rooftop beneath the stars.

The lodge has its own pool, wi-fi access and a small store selling local crafts.

Meals are served buffet-style, with the option of fresh eggs, bacon and toast at breakfast – or even Champagne. Lunch could be a light bite of corn fritters or fishcakes or a relaxed bush lunch eaten on the go in a dried-out river bed. Back at the lodge, the whole family could enjoy pizzas by the pool or a three-course dinner, while adults can sip G&Ts as the stars come out. Most packages include two glasses of South African wine with dinner.

A short walk from the main lodge, the 23 individual lodges (or “kulalas”) are positioned in an arc to give fabulous views to the west across the dunes. Each has its own terrace to enjoy the desert panorama privately. Expect semi-tented lodgings, simple furnishings, lots of canvas and thatch and ensuite bathrooms. Staff are more than happy to make your bed on the flat roof area if you fancy sleeping under the stars.

Kulala Desert Lodge welcomes families. There is a children’s menu available, as well as family rooms with extra space. Older children will love the activities, such as fat biking through the dunes.

The Lodge’s electricity is powered by a hybrid system of solar energy during daylights hours and a diesel generator during low-light hours, meaning the generator is only used for eight hours a day. Each tent is linked to a small solar geyser which offers piping hot water throughout the day and night.

Kulala Desert Lodge has a superb position on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park, home to the impressive dunes of Sossusvlei. The result is fantastic desert views, as well as exclusive access to Sossusvlei. The lodge is easily accessible by road from Swakopmund or Windhoek – but the fastest and most memorable way to reach it is by light aircraft.
