Kicheche Mara Camp

If you’re looking for the quintessential ‘Out of Africa’ experience then you’ll find it at Kicheche Mara Camp, a classic tented camp hidden in a beautiful valley in a prime wildlife area of the Mara North Conservancy.

Eight luxury tents are laid out alongside a seasonal stream from where you can observe the resident birdlife and plains game beyond. The location is ideal, as game-viewing frequently starts in the camp itself and there is prime wildlife habitat on all sides making Kicheche Mara the perfect base for your safari in the Masai Mara.

Facilities & Activities

The camp lounge has a stunning view down the valley and offers comfortable seating, a library, board games and local crafts. The camp prides itself on offering a friendly and intimate stay, with hosts treating you as welcome guests.

Enjoy private game-drives in customised, open-sided 4WD vehicles manned by highly knowledgeable silver-rated safari guides, many recruited from the local Masai community. All guides are experienced at working with photographers and select optimal positions at sightings, taking lighting and animal behaviour into account. It’s also possible to arrange a fly camp experience to enjoy a night out in the wilderness with your guide hosting you, as well as visits to local community projects.

Meals are taken in the dining tent or in the shade of a large Euclea tree with a beautiful view down the valley. From extended game-drives, to bush breakfasts, night drives and impromptu sundowners, nothing is too much trouble for the Kicheche team. The camp boasts its own organic vegetable garden. Drinks are included.

With only 8 tents, there is an intimate and relaxed atmosphere in camp. All tents are overlooking the Olare Orok stream and the western escarpment of the valley. Spacious en-suite bathrooms with running hot and cold water form part of each tent. Lighting is supplied 24 hours; however the solar powered system does not allow hair dryers.

Take a Video Tour

Children will enjoy a unique insight into nature with game walks (outside camp for over 12 years only) where they will catch, identify and release amazing insects and butterflies with the help of Masai guides. They can learn how to track and recognise animal prints and spoor, birds and their calls, as well as learn about traditional Masai culture; fire making, bows and arrows, beading and spear throwing.

There is a new, two bedroom family suite that can accommodate 2 adults and up to 3 children (or two couples) all in proper beds with a central sitting room. There is also a quad tent for families of 4, also all in proper beds (one double and two singles) but sharing one room/tent. Kicheche recommend that children sharing a tent alone (i.e. separate from their parents) should be aged 12 years and above.

Kicheche offer a range of children’s menus which feature the popular bush pizza and the recommended ‘sundowner meals’ where your child’s picnic dinner is served as you enjoy a sunset drink whilst out on a game drive. This makes life a lot more relaxed when returning to camp!

This camp is best suited for children over the age of 11 years.

Kicheche Mara Camp is a proud member of The Long Run, one of the world’s largest sustainable development initiatives led by nature based businesses. The vision of the organization is of a world in which business, nature and people work harmoniously together for a sustainable future.

The camp is located in an Acacia Valley, a prime wildlife area, in this top quality Conservancy, and game-viewing starts frequently in the camp itself. Access is from Mara North Airstrip, 20 minutes drive away. Bordering the Mara Reserve, one of the biggest conservancies in the area there’s amazing game-viewing all year round.
