Chitwa Chitwa has the pleasure of welcoming children of all ages. From the age of 6 onwards, upon the dedicated guide approval, children will be permitted to participate with the adults on safari. For the younger children, dedicated activities will be offered to the family during the arrival briefing.

Chitwa’s Children Eco-Experience offers activities such as a daily bush walk within the enclosed camp area, walks are guided by an educator who will offer the children the opportunity to learn about and identify the beautiful fauna and flora in the area. Basic bush skills are taught such as how to survive in the bush, what plants to eat and how to build a basic shelter. Others include face painting session and evenings spent roasting marshmallows and sipping hot chocolate whilst listening to the enchanting folk-tales as told by an “intokoto” (the Shangaan term used to describe a person with lots of life experience).

There is a cosy library with a large selection of books and TV. Chitwa Chitwa story books are placed on children’s beds during turn down in the evenings. These fairy tales include traditional local bedtime stories such as “when the elephant was King” and “ When the hippo was hairy”.

The luxury suites can accommodate up to 2 extra beds for children under the age of 12 yrs whilst the Charlsy Suite is the ideal family stay, with 2 large inter-leading suites. The Private Chitwa House sleeps 4 (an extra bed is possible in one of the rooms which will make up a double & triple, so maximum 5!), but do keep in the mind that there is a pool that surrounds the house.

Chitwa’s villas use solar water heating systems using evacuated tube solar collectors and have reduced the power consumption of their pools by 90%, with the installation  of variable speed pumps. The villa’s thatched roofs are all insulated with natural highveld grass, which reduces heat in summer and heat loss in winter.

The lodge can be accessed by flying from either Cape Town or Johannesburg into either Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport or Hoedspruit Airport, then with a road transfer to the lodge. Chitwa Chitwa is a 3 hour drive from Kruger Airport and 2 hours from Hoedspruit Airport.

The lodge is located on one of the largest waterholes of the exclusive 63,000 hectare Sabi Sand Private Game Reserve, which forms part of the greater Kruger National Park.  As a result, the animals have grown accustomed to the presence of safari vehicles in their territory allowing some of the best opportunities to meet Africa’s Big Five (buffalo, elephant, rhino, leopard and lion).
