A serene infinity pool is at the heart of the hotel. Surrounded by a sun terrace with day beds, towering palm trees, and a shaded bar area, it’s just the spot to kick back and relax day and night. To ramp up your sense of Zen, there’s a serene spa where treatments include hot stone massage, anti-ageing facials and body wraps that encase you in a toning combination of Vietnamese coffee and brown sugar.

Yoga and meditation classes take place in a peaceful open-air pavilion. Those seeking something more fast-paced can head to the riverside tennis court or the high-tech pilates studio for a session on the reformers.

Guests can borrow bikes for free to explore the islet – or book a half-day guided cycling tour of the villages and canals of the Mekong Delta. Other bookable experiences include Vietnamese cooking classes, poolside barbecues, picnics by the river and cruises to the floating markets.

The main restaurant, The Cafe, has a sophisticated feel, with polished tiled floors, a vaulted ceiling and tall windows and doors that spill out onto the terrace. Pull up a chair inside or dine alfresco – by the pool or beneath a banyan tree in the gardens. Breakfast is included, and cooked to order and the cuisine includes both local and Western options – expect everything from steaming bowls of pho and banh mi to barbecued steak and seafood dinners at The Grill. For light bites between meals and aperitifs, head to the relaxed Lounge & Bar.

Scattered through the grounds, the freestanding pavilions feature simple yet elegant interiors with creamy colour schemes, high ceilings and warm woods. Glass doors open onto patios, with the best overlooking the river. Bathrooms are spacious and bright with double sinks and rainfall showers.

The Pool Villas are extra special. Ranging from one-bedroom to five-bedroom pads, they not only feature private pools and secluded gardens but also offer personalised service with a villa host and private luxury boat cruises and tours. These are ideal for larger groups (of up to 15) seeking extra privacy, added indulgence and bespoke service.

Children are welcome and they will enjoy both the games room with its arts and crafts and toys and splashing in the shallow section of the pool. Accommodation-wise, families are spoilt for choice with everything from interconnecting rooms to multi-room villas to choose from. Standard rooms (Garden, Lake and River Rooms) can accommodate two adults and one child, with complimentary cots available on request. The Family Room is a wise choice for a family of four. More spacious, it’s made up of a queen bed and two twin beds (or a baby cot) and has a lovely living area, two showers and a private garden.

For added space and splendour, opt for a Pool Villa. Sleeping between 3-15 guests in up to 5 bedrooms, they have the added perk of having their own pool, a private garden and extra personal service. These cater well for multigenerational family travellers and multiple families travelling together.

Policies for saving energy including running a solar plant and buggies using solar energy amongst other energy saving procedures.  The resort also attempts to save water through only offering showers and using river water for landscaping but making sure that water released back has been certified to a safe level.  The use of plastic is also reduced by only using glass bottles and paper boxes and bags for take aways.

Azerai Can Tho is located on the peaceful and private Au Islet off Hau River. Guests catch the hotel’s private boat from the west bank of Can Tho – it’s a five-minute journey up a private canal to the resort. Can Tho is the epicentre of the Mekong Delta with a buzzing waterfront, lively town and nearby floating markets to explore. The largest, Cai Rang, is a highlight – get there by 7am to beat the crowds and the heat.
