A Family Holiday to Skiathos & Skopelos
Sun, Sea… and a little bit of Mamma Mia! magic

If you’ve ever watched Mamma Mia! and secretly wished you could step into that sun-soaked world of turquoise waters, whitewashed houses, and spontaneous singing, a family trip to Skiathos and Skopelos might be the perfect holiday for you!

Skiathos: First Stop

Our adventure began with a night on the small but lively island of Skiathos, where we stayed close enough to walk into Skiathos Town. It’s cobbled lanes and vibrant waterfront, made for a fun evening stroll – ice cream for the kids, sunset cocktails for the grown-ups and an obligatory photo of the Old Port – the setting for the Mamma Mia! scene where Sam and Harry miss the boat! 

A Short Hop to Skopelos

The following morning, a quick and easy 40-minute Seajet ferry ride brought us to Skopelos, the quieter, greener sister island. 

Here we hired a car and spent a blissful 4 nights exploring this beautiful island with its pine-covered hills and sparkling bays with pebble beaches and crystal-clear waters. As big fans of the film, climbing up to the dramatic chapel of Agios Ioannis (Mamma Mia! wedding scene) perched high on a rock was a real holiday highlight. We saved our visit until late afternoon when the day trippers left, and we were rewarded with the chapel to ourselves and stunning sunset views!

Evenings were spent exploring Skopelos Town’s narrow alleyways, shopping for souvenirs and soaking up the atmosphere.

Back to Skiathos

We finished our Greek holiday back on Skiathos with a wonderful stay at the stylish Elivi, which boasts the most stunning location perched on a hillside surrounded by pine trees, on the southwestern tip of the island. Skiathos island is a beach lovers paradise, home to beautiful soft golden sand beaches, and the Elivi enjoys direct access to three of the best:   Koukounaries, Ambelakia and Big Banana. With easy access to Skiathos Town we even managed to squeeze in a night at the open-air cinema to watch, yes, you’ve guessed it….Mamma Mia! A fun evening of singing and cheesy dancing topped off a very memorable family holiday.

Why we think it works for families

Both islands are safe, easy to get around, and wonderfully welcoming to children. The pace is relaxed, the food is fresh and unfussy (grilled meat, Greek salad, and honey-drizzled yoghurt were firm favourites), and with scenery straight out of a postcard (or movie!) you’re sure to fall for the laid-back charm and natural beauty of these islands.
